Hi all. Not sure this this is the right discussion group.

About two weeks ago, I purchased a golden tip anemone for my clownfish to use as a host. In the first few days, it explored the tank, eventually settling in a spot with adequate flow and lighting. Shortly after, my clownfish found it and began hosting, happily playing in its tentacles.

During the day, the anemone occasionally closes up for a few minutes to half an hour, before opening again.

My local fish store advised that I should feed it every three days mysis and brine shrimp.

This morning, I found the anemone in a new spot, fully open. However, after a few hours (as shown in the attached pictures), it was lying on its side. Is this normal?

I use the Hanna test kit and my water parameters are:

Alkalinity - 9.0
Calcium - 444
Mag - 1315
Phosphate - 0.09
Nitrate - 21.9
My fish tank is over 17 months old. All my coral is growing and fish is health.

First, I’m curious if the anemone's behavior is normal or if it's a sign that it's dying. I attempted to isolate it in my breeder cage, I can't remove or detach it from the rock.

Second, but not that important for this thread, how can I lower my nitrates? I don’t have a sump at the moment, but I plan to add one in the next few months—I just need to build a stand for it.

your levels are fine, just do more water changes to get the nitrates down.
Do not feed the anemone just yet. Let it settle into a spot for at least 3 weeks before feeding. If it is moving around it might slow digestion and cause food do rot inside of it before it has time to eat it. Best case you just tick it off a bit and it spits the food back out

Hi all this morning I cleaned my tank. I thought my Anemone settled in the corner of the tank.. whilst clean I found I could easily pick up the Anemone. It wasn't stuck the the rock.. reading up on Anemone health, I read that if the mouth is open.. it doesn't look good for him.. I take this picture with my filter and wave maker off.. your thought?
