I have a one year old tank and just added an anemone. I can’t tell if it’s acclimating or if it is dead :( any ideas?

Not Dead or acclimating. It hasn't dug it's foot down in the sand yet, or if it has and released, It's looking for a more suitable location of light and flow to rebury.

When I introduce an LTA such as yours, I give it a hand by removing the sand all the way down to the glass, holding the anemone down in the digout and then backfilling around the foot.

You could use a pvc cap slightly bigger than the foot and burry that in the sand.

My LTA and Carpets have never fallen for either that, or clay pots. They seem to want to dig their foot back under a rock then extend out

So in your opinion, would it be a good idea to dig up the sand and put rocks around it?

Far from dead. With most any anemone- you have to avoid the extremes which are extreme light and extreme water flow. Too much water flow and they release and move as in the case of yours. Too little water flow and they head towards flow which is often the powerheads. Too much light and they hide and too little, they expel their zooxanthellae which is their color and energy source and soon they turn white and bleach at which point they are destined then to die.
Moderate to subtle water flow is more than sufficient for yours as is moderate lighting. Turn flow down to lower speed to allow it to plant its foot in a suitable location. No need to force it to where you like as it will simply go to where IT likes

No rocks. You risk damaging the nem. Back filling with a bit of sand around the foot, enough for the flow to not take it, is enough.

It'll do the rest. Watching them dig is cool. Try to catch it.

Yes- unfortunately this is a typical behavior of a dead anemone I would suggest removing it from the tank as soon as possible to avoid alibi buildup
This is bad advise

M doreensis require relatively low light and current as far as anemone go. At least he got his foot into the sand.
they require a deep sand bed.
How is he doing now? Please update.
