Anecdotal evidence of higher torch/hammer polyp bailout during splits?

Hello all,

I think I’m seeing a trend in my tank of higher rate of polyp bailout in newly formed/splitting heads of torches or hammers. Is this typical?

Also, my torches look absolutely awful when they’re splitting, like they’re about to kick the bucket and then all of a sudden look amazing again after the split has happened. Is this the case for everyone else?

Am I missing something? To all the big torch aficionados/keepers out there: what’s your experience with torch appearance/sensitivity/propensity to bailout during splits?

My hammer and frogspawn started as one polyp many years ago, now they both the size of volleyballs, never any bailouts, and they should not look 'aweful' when splitting. I would not agree its normal. (sorry) But I've never kept a torch so no comment there.

My wild guess is that some element might be missing for the coral to complete the split successfully, but IDK, hope someone can help, good luck.

Thanks for the response. It’s definitely odd. I have a few hammers that have gone from a single head to well over a dozen in less than a year so they’re definitely growing and they seem pretty healthy. The hammers don’t look as bad as the torches when they’re splitting but I’ve only ever had bailout when a head was splitting, the rest of the hammer is fine.

The torches are a head scratcher. They go back to looking amazing after the head fully splits or bailout. I would say I’m 75/25 full split and amazing versus full split and bailout. No bailouts unless they’re splitting for me.

I would say my euphyllia retract a little during growth spurts but nothing worth noting. The calcium growth process usually happens overnight in my opinion when corals are closed up anyways.

I only have hammers as well, I usually look over and see they have gotten bigger, no issues when splitting/growing.

I've had bailouts with new additions, one head doesn't like the tank and bails. Shaded branches usually bail. High flow they may bail. The last major bail of several heads, can't figure the cause. I moved the coral and it was doing very well in the new spot growing and expanding daily. Then practically over night lost half of it's heads. My thought was harassment by shrimp. I still have the coral, but it hasn't really bounced back.

I sent in for an ICP and found that my tank was low on iodine. Started dosing. Lots of torches and hammers are splitting and no losses. Had a couple of wall hammers and frogspawn that were looking lackluster and are doing awesome now. My gonis are extending more than ever. Too soon to tell if this is all it was (been three weeks or so) but LPS look amazing now.
