My husband has developed a theory on the impact of ambient room lighting on our corals and I would like to get yalls thoughts.

We've been resetting our main display tanks and recently set up a temporary holding tank in our bedroom for all the things I don't exactly have a home for yet and don't know what to do with. Just random stuff I don't know where to put.

These corals were moved along with the exact same water and rocks out of the tank they were in before, same lighting and same schedule, and same two small fish

Every single coral in this temp tank without a doubt looks 1000% better after being moved.

My husband thinks it's because our bedroom is completely blacked out so all day there is no other lighting on the tanks except the tank lights themselves. Out in the living room there is a lot of daylight as well as regular room lighting.

......he now wants to black out our entire living room as well.

I love our tanks but I'm not sure I can live in only blue light forever.....is he crazy or is there actually something to be said for blocking out the other light spectrums?

Loads of factors at play. I’d say the exact opposite has been true in my case over the decades. The more sunlight I get the tank, the healthier the system overall. Plus it’s free so that’s a nice bonus.

Your corals may look fuller as they extend more for more light. Less flow can also make them extend more as they reach for more flow and light. Maybe less filtration in the new tank and the corals are enjoying more “food?” Maybe more filtration and better water? Maybe he is right and excessive sunlight is bad for corals?

Again, way too many factors and I’d never black out my living space for a tank. I’d move the tank first, if possible.

All good thoughts!! I agree too many other factors to know.

Personally I just think he's been looking for an excuse to make the room darker and this seemed like a good reason, lol
