I changed my lights, and now I'm red slime free.... Went from power compacts to led. Couldn't be more happier.

I was dealing with this forever as well. The solution for me was chemipure elite, algone pads and I adjusted my powerheads. One powerhead on the rear bottom left and one on the bottom front right. Rocks in the middle of the tank with adequate space in the front and the back make it so the water flows similar to an upside down tornado. I struggled with red slime forever until I changed my aquascaping so there wasn't any dead spots in the tank. As far as little nooks and crannies within the rocks my CUC takes care of whatever algae grows there.

It might take drastic measures but I don't believe you really need to go buy a fancy skimmer. Grab two small powerheads and try this out. You might have to shoot them at the glass slightly so they don't blow too much sand around. With proper flow a lot of algae will find it very hard to grow.

I did three days with no lights and it killed a lot of it off, which all got vacuumed up. I also rearranged my rockscape today (and I really hate it, but I felt like I had disrupted the tank long enough so I called it quits) its all center though. My LEDs havent come yet :( So ill give the new rock setup a few days to see if that seems to be helpinh...

If you do go the chemical route, I recommend red slime remover instead of chemiclean. I've used both in my high nutrient macroalgae tank where other methods of removal are impossible. Red slime remover works faster, I experienced no side effects, and you don't even have to use the full recommended dose.

You have to knock your phosphates down or it will come back, I use a three part filter that helps phosphates & silicates, it also has carbon in it. I find it works well when I change it out often

Im holding out on chemicals until a last resort, but ill keep that in mind. My LEDs were delayed due to high number of orders, but my fixture got upgraded for free and should arrive wednesday. Im still keeping up with water changes, and depending on my next paycheck im looking into a protein skimmer. ..

IMHO the #1 thing of importance is to find the source of excess nutrients/ phosphates then a good maintenance schedule will take care of the rest to make this lil Reef enjoyable as intended. What substrate do you have in there? I took over care of a quadriplegic's 28 Bio-cube a few years ago that had same issues and found the root of the cause to be the silica sand used. I changed it out for a Carib-Sea live sand and added a Hydor Nano for extra flow which took care of the issues. I'd also suggest ditching the flake food and replace with a quality pellet like NLS, higher protein and less phosphates added.

Cheers, Todd

Im not sure what the substrate is, got it at petsmart, it came in a bag. Its been two years so I really dont remember. I also added a little black diamond sand blasting sand, which I used in a freshwater tank, and I had also heard about others using it on another forum.
