The hole that I'm to put the pole into is supposed to have a "securing screw" but the screw does nothing to secure it. Its just scratching the post. Any suggestions?

Once you know the size, say 3mm, you could buy a size larger tap, say 3.5mm and a 3.5 set screw. Tap new threads with the next size up and use a next size up set screw. Just a idea.
