I agree the pvc sumps look industrial construction. My sump would probably cost more than the display tank. Had 8 x 350gal Rubbermaid stock troughs to hold live rock (it was a commercial facility) they can really take a beating and never had one fail.
Thanks to all have commented the feedback is awesome. Going to give this more thought.

Regards
Dan

I've consider the Rubbermaid solution. Had a 150 that I threw out when they were affordable due to space constrains I now which I had retained. Their height my main issue being they then require a higher stand which may not be a concern for all.

SWEET..........
It would be interesting what you are using each chamber for.

so from the left, drains & heaters zone, socks, skimmer, crushed LR, crushed LR, Siporax in backets, return pumps.

For socks I had a recessed piece of acrylic made that I siliconed into that second section.

The long section was going to be a fuge but I dont want to clean things anymore so skipped lights in that area and its probably going to be deep sand/cryptic zone soon. Sometimes I also use it as fish jail.

Very nice layout. How many drain lines? What are you using for return pumps? Appreciate the comments

I've got 2 external overflow boxes on the outside of the DP, inside I have a single 66" slim box overflow, all this by Modular Marine.

Each of these boxes has 3 drains: full siphon, free flow and emergency

4 of these drains are going al the way left and the emergencies would splash - one into skimmer section and the other into the return pump section if it ever came to that.

There are 2 Abyzz (A100 & A200) return pumps at the moment allowing for redundancy. I will also soon install a 3rd small pump to run off 24V in case of complete power loss so when both of the abyzz lose power from the APC the small pump will circulate small amount of water through the dp and sump.

Why not a large section for a couple large matt rollers?

I don't think I would do a big build with socks today

Im slowly working (brewing?) on a reef exclusive type prototype wink wink.

I can slice the sock holder out of place when ready. I'm slow with changes because I overthink my stuff but oh yeah its coming....eventually.

I do have a trick up the sleeve with my socks. A quality float switch connected via APEX sends me a text when the socks get full. In addition I also schooled my 16 yo daughter on how to quickly get them replaced - she is on call and I never heard a complaint. :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Ignore the silicone hose, that was just to break in the skimmer.

Look great. Abyzz pumps - cant beat that. I will either be running two Red Dragon 5 Eco or two Vectra L2. What ya think?
Another side question. Tank will be on first floor above the basement sump. Contractors are going to cut an opening in the floor the same size as an a/c grate. If/when I move remove the pipes and insert the grill. Now the question should I run rigid or flex pvc.

100% - Rigid, schedule 40, use sweeps instead of elbows wherever you can.

Between Red Dragon and Eco I'd pick Red Dragon, used it in the past on my temp tank, no issues and silent.

here is an example

My bad, I definitely misunderstood what you meant.

Since you're doing this from the basement, the vectras are a terrible choice. They're flow rated and not made for high pressure applications like the high pressure versions of the red dragons/abyzz in general

You will hear the water running over the sock when it's full

It sounds like you have a creek in your stand, by your I mean mine

I don't need a controller for that, my ears do that

Anyway, good luck

Head pressure is indeed my concern. I have budgeted for the Red Dragon pumps. Appreciate the advice C_AWOL
Look into the Sicce Syncra ADV 10.0 (A/C, 90w) or the Sicce Syncra SDC 9.0 (D/C, 30-95w) for your return pump. I'm using a 10.0 for my basement system with about 16 ft head. 5 year warranty.

Basement sump? Rubbermaid stock tank hands down.

External skimmer or set skimmer in its own suspended weir box to fix water level and shield it from back flaw when return pumps are off. This is important and something most under tank skimmers can’t accommodate.

Internal or external return pumps. But for pressure pumps you still can go wrong with the iwaki or pan-world style mag drive pumps. They run forever and are inexpensive, and quiet enough. DC pumps to do the job (with no real benefit other than soft start) will cost exponentially more.
