I checked out the Knowledge Center on the Reef By Steele website and learned some interesting details about the benefits of dosing phytoplankton in aquariums. Phytoplankton is a rich source of macro- and micronutrients, including essential fatty acids like Omega-3, which are crucial for the health and coloration of marine invertebrates and fish. Regularly dosing phytoplankton can improve coral health, coloration, growth, and polyp extension, as well as boost zooplankton populations. Additionally, live phytoplankton helps reduce nitrate (NO3) and phosphate (PO4) levels in the aquarium, balancing pH by increasing dissolved oxygen and decreasing carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. This can also help prevent the growth of nuisance algae, contributing to a healthier aquarium environment overall .
