Well, I am finally going to be documenting a build. I have been reefing for several years now. My fist tank (which I still have and love), which was my wife’s idea to purchase, is a 20 gallon JBJ cube. I put this tank up and custom built a stand for, and did multiple things without documenting a flipping thing hardly.
IMG_1545.jpeg

Once I started noticing on here how fun following a build can be, I wanted to do it, and I wanted to do it right. I figured I would wait for my first upgrade in order to do my proper build thread. Well boys and girls, today is finally that day!

I ordered an Innovative Marine 40L lagoon AIO and White aluminum stand. They threw in a 15 gallon ATO container ($200 some value) for free. I highly recommend leaving things in your cart for a long time….wink wink. It was estimated to be delivered on Monday next week. However, it arrived in a warehouse in Columbus (Ohio that is… O-H!) this morning and they were fine with me going to pick it up, instead of having to wait until Monday for them to deliver it. Which would have made for a long and anxious weekend lol! So, I squeezed it inside the back of my Tiguan and brought her home.
IMG_1554.jpeg

After getting everything inside, I sat there and thought to myself how great a job IM did at building such a cool box around the aquarium to protect it. I felt like Ralphie’s dad in A Christmas Story when he got his major award delivered. Only thing that was missing was “Ragile’” written on it in “Italian”!
IMG_1555.jpeg

One thing I should mention, since I received the tank earlier than expected, and since I a definitely on a budget, there is plenty of equipment that has not been purchased yet (lights, power heads, heater, etc.) and have not made my aquascape yet. I have the rocks for the scape and will be building that tomorrow. I just wanted to get the tank going on cycling, so lots of things will be added and updated as I go.

I got the white aluminum stand put together in about an hour. I was very pleased with the quality, sturdiness, and overall cosmetics of it. As much as I enjoyed building my other stand (I am a carpenter by trade) this was a big time saver and I am glad I pulled the trigger on it.
IMG_1558.jpeg

Before diving into the tank itself, I made a trip to my LFS, which was having the first day of huge sale they do every year in August to celebrate their anniversary. Could not have been better timing!! Since I do not have an RODI system yet, I grabbed my 5 gallon buckets and got all the water I needed. I also picked up 40 lbs of Carib Sea live sand.
IMG_1563.jpeg

After placing the stand where its permanent home would be and placing the aquarium on the stand, it was time to bust out the levels. Not at all surprised that the stand would need some shimming because the floor wasn’t perfectly level. I’ll likely get creative with some shoe molding or something to cover the gaps that are now at the bottom of the stand from shimming it. The tank is perfectly level in all directions now though.

Now, It was time to put sand, an old temporary power head, water, and a couple rocks from my established tank, into my tank to get a cycle going!! This was going to be it for me for the night, and will be jumping back into everything first thing tomorrow to get more things done.

One little additional thing I decided to do, was take the factory LED light from my wife’s freshwater tank, that we weren’t using because we upgraded the light and lid, and set it up as a “backlight”. I’ve seen this done on a few other tanks online, and thought I would give it a try. I think it’s a fun little feature. Plus the light has a remote and has several options for colors.

Looks good! I the same ato reservoir and I love the choice! The drawer is a game changer since I use 5 gallon jugs to store my rod

Getting to walk out into the living room this morning to admire my new toy and begin prepping to do more work on it today, felt like walking downstairs on Christmas morning as a kid! The sand had settled from last night and I just sat there drinking my coffee and admiring my empty and dark tank for a moment. It was like looking at a blank canvas.
IMG_1577.jpeg

One of the things I neglected to do last night, was going over what I left inside the filtration chambers. On the left side, I stuck with the stock filter sock. On the right side in the custom caddie, I went with the stock filter balls and a bag of seasoned biomax from 20 gallon cube, which should most certainly help with the cycle.

Today, my missions are to round up a light, a heater, and to build my aquascape!

After I get all my equipment together, I will put together a detailed list of everything. I know this isn’t how a build thread typically goes, but this is how I am choosing to do it. After all, it’s MY build thread lol!

Pictures and a description of the process of my aquascape to come later today. For now, I’m off to play!!

Looking great, this is going to be an epic build. Loved the Christmas Story reference :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: the house is up here in Cleveland. I-O from a fellow Buckeye!

I really like the IM Nuvo AIO tanks but never owned one -- yours looks nice.
Been considering the Nuvo 60 SR to replace my 40 breeder in same location (with no room for sump).
Looking forward to hearing how maintenance works out for you with this configuration.

Good job and good luck...

Thanks man! I’m so excited about this build! Oh trust me, being a die hard Christmas story fan, I am well aware of the house being there. Which is amazing!

Thank you! I’m certainly curious about how maintenance is going to go as well lol! I’ll be sure to stay on top of updates with this tank.

Missions accomplished today! As I stated earlier in this thread, this build is currently on a budget. Some of these items may be upgraded later on, but this is what I’m going with for now.

I took to Facebook Marketplace to see if there was anything decent at a decent price. I was on the hunt for a light and a heater. No luck on FB finding a decent heater, but I was able to find a light. It is 30”-36” Glowrium. Not a brand I was familiar with, but it appeared to have enough bells and whistles to keep me satisfied for the time being. It has an app where you can customize the spectrums of light, set sunrise and sunset, has Bluetooth and WiFi, and also has an extra wire with a thermometer on it and will tell you your water temperature (which is pretty fun). It certainly appears to have enough PAR to be able to grow corals nicely. I will say though, not a big fan of how the wires come out of the side of the light and hangs off the right side of my tank. I will need to get creative on how to make that look cleaner. Something I ŵill likely tackle when I make the control board and get the inside of the stand looking nice a professional. Currently I just have things temporarily placed in there to simplify get things turned on. So, hence why no pics inside the stand yet. It’s currently hideous lol.

I ended up going to the LFS again today. Still running their 27th anniversary sale. Like I said, the timing of this tank and their sale, has been money! Literally lol! I went to grab a heater. Got a couple other things while I was there. The heater I went with was the Fluval M200. Which fits perfectly in the chamber next to the filtration chamber. It’s rated for a 65 gallon tank, so, plenty enough heating power for my 40 gallon. Got my tank to 78 degrees pretty quickly and kept it there. I also walked out with a bottle of Fritz Turbo Start to help along the cycling of the tank, and I also grabbed a little more life rock.
IMG_1580.jpeg
IMG_1581.jpeg

With the light and heater taken care of and installed, it was time to get the aquascape built. I got everything laid out in the garage. Grabbed my hammers, chisels, and adhesives. Laid out the inside tank dimensions on the cardboard I was working on, so I didn’t build anything to close to the glass, and started putting some rocks together. I used super glue and epoxy to put the rocks together. I used up all the life rock I had and also utilized some macro shelf rocks a got in a trade for some Rainbow BTAs I needed to re-home. Big shoutout to @tREEFarm for the rock! Hence, the two different colors of rock. I figured “why not, they’ll all be covered in coralline eventually anyway, so what the heck.” It worked out great because I used several of the shelf pieces as foundation pieces, because they are nice and flat. I also wanted to make sure I had some island rocks, in case I end up going with GSP or Xenia or anything that is desirable but can be invasive. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

Still on the search for some permanent power heads. Any suggestions or anyone trying to get rid of any that would be good for a 40 gallon long, would be very much appreciated. Looking for something good but not something that will require a small loan lol. Same goes for a skimmer.

Tomorrow will be making things look nice inside the stand, power head and skimmer hunting, and setting up my ATO. Until then, GN!

Accomplished a couple things today. Took a cup of sand and about 3 gallons of water out of my established tank and popped it into the 40 gallon this morning. My old tank is loaded with pods. I am hoping that some of them transferred to the new tank and that they survive the nitrite and ammonia spike. So, between the bag of media, sand, and water from my established tank that have been placed in the new one, I am hoping these all help with the cycling process.

I finally unboxed and placed my FREE IM 15 gallon ato reservoir inside my stand. I was kind of surprised that the depth of the reservoir clearly exceeded depth dimension of the stand inside the frame, and was meant to sit on the frame right behind the door. I know that sounds confusing. Just look at the picture lol. It is very pretty! Plus the pullout drawer feature is ingenious. I still need to get the actual ato system. I have the reef breeders prism system in my other tank. Likely what I will go with on this tank as well.

IMG_1602.jpeg

After that, my goal was to get the inside of the stand looking prettier. I had been so concerned about just getting power to things and hadn’t taken the time yet to hide wires, start building a control board, etc.
IMG_1600.jpeg

First, I had to set the height of the stock adjustable shelf that came with the stand. The height of that shelf was determined by the large ATO container that was now in place.

Once that was done, this was going to show me how much room I had to work with, as I wanted my control board on the back of the stand above the shelf. So, once I had my dimensions, I grabbed an already painted piece of cedar 1x6, cut it to length, drilled 6 1 1/8” holes in it, and placed Velcro on it and my stand in order to attach it. I will be putting another coat of paint on the board eventually.
IMG_1606.jpeg
IMG_1607.jpeg
IMG_1608.jpeg

Since I still need my permanent wave makers, protein skimmer, and other gear, the control board is looking a little empty, but it will eventually get more filled up.

I ran all the wires along the back of the stand with cable mounts. Didn’t want to look at a spider web every time I opened up the stand. While doing this, I did the best I could with the annoying wires/controller for my tank light that also shows my tank temperature.
IMG_1611.jpeg

I did a more permanent mounting job of the led light I robbed from the freshwater tank lid we replaced. It kind of serves as 2 functions. A cool looking backlight once that tank light has gone off for the night (side note, only currently turning the tank light on for pictures. Have been keeping it off during my cycle) and it helps to light up the inside of the stand. Pretty happy with it. This is where I stopped for the night. Here are some photos of where we are at to date.

Fun little side note. Apparently I was not the only one inspired by the new fish tank this past weekend. My six year old daughter, who certainly enjoys the fish tanks, could not have been more excited about the cardboard and styrofoam that was available to her after I unboxed everything. I can totally remember the days fort building and what not. It was an all around entertaining and heartwarming experience.
IMG_1595.jpeg
IMG_1597.jpeg

The inspiration did not stop there though. Saturday night when I was working on the new build (pretty much all I did the last three days, with other chores around the house here and there), she took one of the pieces of cardboard from the packaging and drew a scene on it. In her fine piece of artwork, I’m on the right, the tank and stand are in the middle, and wife is on the left reading a book on the couch. I’d say she nailed it! lol!

Quick update. Took one of my rainbow BTAs to the LFS tonight. They currently had a lot of nems already in stock. So, they couldn’t give me much credit for it. All worked out for everyone in the end though. Store was pleased with a good addition without much cost, I got some free freshwater for the ATO and filter floss, there is now slightly more space in my 20 gallon cube (Still selling rainbow BTAs for $40, local pickup only. Will trade for nano protein skimmer or power heads).
IMG_1631.jpeg

IMG_1634.jpeg

However, the main reason I wanted to do all this, was to free up 1/2 the small rock that the single nem was now sitting on. The most recent time I sold some nems and broke up a rock to keep some and sell some, 3 of them ended up on this small piece of rock. 2 have since vacated the rock, so I wanted to get most of this rock inside the cycling 40 gallon. It is now sitting in the empty filter chamber where my skimmer will eventually be. This rock has been in my established tank for about 4 years.

I’m aware of the algae on the rock, but I’m running no lights on my cycling tank. I do not even plan to turn on the lights after getting my first few fish. I also anticipate getting a stud CUC.
IMG_1632.jpeg

The tank began running on 8/2. Started doing some cycling tests a few days ago.
Current parameters I’m checking are just ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and PH. This is where those levels were today.

Ammonia- 0.25
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 10
pH- 8

Hope you all have a great evening!

Tank has been cycling for a week now. This is where I’m currently at.

Ammonia- .50
Nitrite- 0
PH- 8
Nitrate- 10

My nitrite has been a solid 0 since I started testing, while ammonia and nitrate levels have both nudged up a bit. Would my nitrite staying at 0 have anything to do with the media, rock, and sand I used from my established tank? Is the ammonia just being processed into nitrate so fast that the nitrite isn’t registering?

Quick update. Tank STILL cycling. It has been 2 weeks and a few days since cycle began. Have not tested yet today. Ammonia been sitting at .50 for 2 weeks now. Nitrites have never shown up on a test. Ph has been a solid 8 since the get. Nitrate has been seemingly going back and forth bewtween 10-20 for 2 weeks now.

Also, I did get my ATO purchased and installed. Found it still new on the box on FB Marketplace. It’s an Auto Aqua Smart ATO Micro.
