DAILY QUESTION: What are factors that you consider important when choosing a reef light? Why did you choose the light that you are currently using on your reef tank?

Performance and durability is the most important. What puts out the most PAR, with the best spread, with great colors, and quality materials that last forever.
Controlling features are second. I'm a network engineer and love knobs to play with. I want to be able to control the light remotely and tune every possible aspect of it.
I chose my current light because at the time it was a great performer at a great price from a company with a good reputation. It also had remote control and a well developed app.

I have 2 main factors that influence my decision on a light.
1.) Can I afford it right now?
2.) Will it support the life that I have or would like to have in my tank?

The biggest factors for me are the performance of the light and the cost. There are a lot of lights out there and some are crazy expensive while not really putting out any better performance. I chose my current lights because I got spooked from the Sky with the unofficial discontinued status and the repair ability of the Orphek lights.

I chose the Orphek OR3 bars to replace the the stock Fluval lights to provide the appropriate amount of light for my tank and to improve the overall light spectrum.

Personally I really enjoy a light that is set to come on/ go off at certain times. I get forgetful (fibro fog) and we all know too little or too much light can disrupt tank inhabitants. Plus watching my wild bettas absolutely freak out with a quick snap on or off was bothersome for me as I want them all comfortable. So ramping up and down is also very important. Honestly I feel that having light cycles that mimic natural time is very important for the biological clocks of fish and inverts. The current USA brand gave me the ramping at a decent price. Sadly it was a sacrifice in quality. I’d love to see how a more well built light handles the ramping.
