The first thing I would look at after buying two different kinds of lights is the app or controller that changes the settings. I would like to have something user friendly and simple. I'm pretty tech-savvy so I often wonder how some people even figure out these apps they can be so complex. I would also look at the sun/moon sync and how they "wind up/down" after experiences of having it be manual and never quite the same. Something else I would consider is penetration. I have an 8ft tank that is 29" tall so it's pretty important.
This has been a real struggle for me. I have a 1yo 100 gallon and a 6 month old 450 gallon that both have some algae and I sometimes just leave the light off if it gets too bad. I've got it mostly under control in my 100 gallon now, but the 450 I'm still struggling to get the lights to where they aren't too much or too little. The Reefbreeders are really strong and I've now had to kill my two supplemental bars due to algae and bleaching. Would love to have a light that is simple and straight-forward, easy to change the settings.

Listen to other reefers, do your research! Research everything - the cycles, the settings, capabilities. Research has become a really big part of my life when it comes to this hobby. Everything from the individual types of coral and subspecies to the biome, lighting, sumps, refugiums, chaeoalgae, algae in general, UV filters - it never ends. Really is half the fun though
More than even growth, I would like to see my coral just be super healthy and colorful. Not that it isn't now, but I see some tanks that are just "wow" and I honestly think it has everything to do with lighting and nutrition. It really take the best combination and a perfect little wet world.
Elaborating on the previous question I answered about light and corals growing, it really has to be in perfect balance for coral and fish to thrive. Parameters, lights, and water quality is what it all boils down to - lights being an extremely important aspect.
