My expertise on sps probably go as far as only knowing what sps means, or do I…

I digress, I picked up this beautiful birds nest coral from LFS and noticed there are those dark spots on some tips of coral, where the tips are usually white. Upon closer look it looks a bit of flesh is falling off and polyp is turning black.

What are those? Should I clip those tips?

Yep, clip them off , preferably out of tank ,looks like algae on dead tips.

Brand new tanks tend to be unstable which may or may not be indicative of experience. It’s not important tot he black tips at this time.

The black tips look like dead tips covered in algae to me. This colony is also a good size and flow becomes critical at this stage as well as appropriate lighting and nutrients.

Can you share parameters, flow, and lighting? It’ll help the group understand what kind of advice to offer.
