Hello everyone, I'm getting my new tank in 2 weeks and will do a fish-less cycle. Once my tank is fully cycled, do I add phyto plankton and copepods then, or do I wait until the ugly stage to add them?
This is a question for those of you who culture phytoplankton. I've just set up my first Nannochloropsis culture similarly to the bucket set-up in this thread: www.reef2reef.com/threads/culturing-phytoplankton.59497/
But I was wondering if I could use flexible LED strips around the sides of the...
hi all,
wondering if this is the right way to go about it.
Right now I am on day 2 of my setup and the only thing that concerns me is the color of the water/phyto.
Used this stuff to start the phyto culture
Used only enough to give the water a tint of green even though this stuff does not...
I'm cycling with dry rock, and when that's over, I'll seed my tank with copepods in a bottle.
Should I invest in live phytoplankton to feed the copepods and make them reproduce faster, or is dead phytoplankton like EasyReefs EasyBooster gonna do just fine?
If I buy cheaper, dead, phytoplankton...
So I setup a DIY copepod culture to try to keep a supply of pods around to dose my new tank. I have a 2 Liter Erlenmeyer flask w/stopper hooked up to a air pump. I added a jar of Tig pods f/algae barn and have added some ocean magik to tint the water.
My water is not quite as dark as some of...
Hi,
Would anyone be able to identify this species? It’s motile, green, and oval shaped. I cultured it in standard salinity saltwater.
Other than that, I only have a Chinese name 扁藻.
Sorry for the poor quality microscopy.
Thanks,
Adam
Hi everyone,
For those of you that are culturing (or have cultured) phyto, have you ever noticed white particles developing?
If so, any idea what they are and if they can be fed to the reef or need to be filtered out, or even not used?
I’ve got two cultures going; one has these white...

I bought a 500mL Nannochloropsis culture from eBay and thought I'd see if I could keep it alive with a few things I had lying about the house. I couldn't easily get my hands on specific algae culture media, and I wasn't too keen on maintaining a perfectly sterile culture environment, so I wanted...
Yesterday, I received a bottle of Kent Marine PhytoPlex which had been sitting in a mailbox for 5 hours. The outside temperature was in the high 90’s (Fahrenheit) and the bottle was quite hot to the touch, so I immediately placed the it in the refrigerator, where it has stayed ever since. Is it...
I use bleach to sanitize phyto culture water. After growing out a week I use the phyto as feed for copepods and also my reef tank.
After bleaching the bioreactor & culture media I "neutralize" the bleach (not sure this is the right term) either using sodium thiosulphate or UV. Is one...
I've been growing copepods for a while in a standalone tank and was wondering, what is the easiest live food to culture?
I was thinking maybe Brine shrimp might be easiest but was wondering what people think.
Has anyone worked out what micron rollermat fleece filter at? I’m using bubble magus small on a 75G reef tank and I’d like to start dosing phytoplankton at night but trying to figure out if the fleece would filter the algae or not. Googled and best I could find out is fleece will filter up to 25...
I have decided to remake this thread because answers to this will help reefers all over the world: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/culturing-phytoplankton-without-fertilizer.767227/
Guillards F2 Fertilizer is American made. Which means anyone outside of America has to import it. I have been...
I imagine that the brand of bleach you use likely doesn't matter as long as there are no surfactants or perfumes in the bleach, but I was wondering what various brands of bleach people tend to use for their culture to get a good idea of what has been sort of "vetted" already.
I wanted to improve my phyto setup and I was hoping to improve my setup. I was watching a video and a guy stated that you can snugly fit a 1/4" tubing over a hard 3/16" air line tubing. However, what I don't quite understand is if 1/4" airline tubing would actually fit on a standard Tetra...
I know this diatom is quite common in aquaculture, mainly for shrimps, but I can't seem to find any decent source for a culture for me to start from. In addition, places like AlgaeBarn blend them in with their phyto feeds they sell.... but thats clearly not pure. The most promising seems to be...
So last week I fed my palys reef roids mixed with phytoplankton and ever since then they have not opened back up it’s coming up on the 8th day of this and I’m starting to get concerned, is there anything I can do? Or is there anything I should do?
Hey all,
Tommy's Phyto is back and We are now a proud sponsor for Reef 2 Reef!
I always heard of people complaining about algae. Why Struggle with algae? I dose Live Phytoplankton daily, Phyto out-competes nuisance algae.

Anyone in Rochester, NY or surrounding areas looking for phyto? Currently culturing weekly batches of Nano and Tetra and have too much left over. Phyto is bottled in 16oz glass jars. $5 contributions accepted to cover supply costs.
I currently use 0.25ml of Julian sprungs marine snow once every two weeks and 1/8 of a 1/4 teaspoon of reef roids every week in my 15 gal, I’ve noticed many experienced reefers use phyto plankton specifically as this feeds zooplankton which in turn feed coral and copepods. Would I benefit from...
