Hi,

I got this yellow flanked fairy wrasse from my LFS on Saturday 10/5. LFS does not quarantine unless there are “obvious signs of illness”

I have the wrasse and a small coral beauty angelfish in my quarantine setup. I’m running some copper proactively. Tank is 78F and salinity is 1.025ppm.

Since I put him in, the wrasse has only sat on the bottom, scared, and with poor colors. I know they can be dramatic so I haven’t let it worry me much. This evening, Sunday, I offered him a piece of brine shrimp and he ate several very willingly before returning to the ground.

However, I noticed some damage to his body I don’t remember seeing when I got him. One pectoral fin, his caudal fin, and dorsal fin have small tears in them. Also, on the left side of his body are two small red patches.

I would like to post now while he is still eating and doing relatively ok, instead of later. (Sometimes a day is all the notice you get before it’s bad)

What would you recommend I do next? The coral beauty has no signs of injury or illness. I’ve seen no negative interactions between the two that would suggest fighting.

Thank you!

Attached are two photos I was able to get of the side with sores

These sores are likely either from netting at LFS or Damage from PVC pipes. I commend you on QT but provide a deep bowl with sand for the wrasse. In addition, you can add kanaplex (which I dont favor mixing meds) along with added aeration should the marks become red or sore

Thank you! I totally forgot that wrasse need that sand. I just added some in, hopefully he finds it soon.

Don’t rule out the coral beauty - fish don’t fight all the time, especially if you are in the room. It only takes a few hits over a few days to cause damage like this.

It could also be Uronema:

I would also bet on the Coral Beauty, have had dwarf angels go after wrasses, especially in smaller tanks (most recently a tiny flavicauda going after a much bigger leucoxanthus that was added after it). Don't bother adding a bowl of sand, fairy wrasses don't sleep in the sand at all. Maybe thinner diameter pipe fittings is a better idea where it can go into and feel secure.

Thank you for help you guys. Ultimately I’ve set up a separate quarantine for him without copper and some KanaPlex instead. Hopefully will help, I’ll keep updating!

Update:
He's up! This morning his color is a little better, resp rate more relaxed, and hes swimming around normally in a PVC elbow. Hopefully he continues to get better!
