only fish I’ve ever had jumping... a filefish. Yes a filefish. The most calm inactive fish they sell.....luckily I found him only minutes after he jumped out. bought eggcrate the next day.

Two types of rimless/screenless tank owners - those who admit to jumpers and those who don’t.

I’ve never had an open topped tank, every tank I’ve ever had has a hood. I seal off the back of the hood as well as I can, but they always seem to find a gap, through the fans or area for cords. It’s sealed really well now, I think that will work well. I use egg crate now, so that way it can even go across the fans.

my lfs told me screen tops weren't necessary too. i guess they want to keep selling us fish?

my female clown jumped as i walked by the tank one day, popped her back in there and put a screen top on that day. she has jumped 2 more times since then, but was thwarted and ended up in the overflow. idk why people go without a top, they get new fish a lot i guess? i like my fish too much

I've never lost a fish from jumping. I've had clown fish, fire fish, pygmy hawkfish, royal gramma, diamond watchmen goby, and yellow watchmen goby.

I've only had a clown jump for defending his territory when I put my hand in the tank. Chompers lives up to his name. But never had a fish willingly jump.

I have a mesh cover, and since I installed it I lost two Orange Spotted Gobies who both jumped through the mesh. Both fish were young and quite small so it can still happen even with a mesh cover.

Really? That’s a bummer . Hopefully my wrasses are not too small . They will probably jump out the day my mesh covering arrives ! 3 days..
thanks for info.

Had a helfrichi firefish make it through 4 weeks of qt with just eggcrate on top. First day in DT with a mesh lid, he jumped and made it through the mesh.

I have a Waterbox Frag 80 which is essentially a 12" tall frag tank. Because of the height, most of the viewing is from the top so I do not have a screen on it and likely will never put on on. I have had a purple firefish get spooked and jump out, when I found him he was pretty dry but I put him back in and within about 5 minutes he was swimming around again. I thought for sure he was a gonner.

Any fish can jump out and I know that I am being a bit of an irresponsible reefer by not doing everything in my power to prevent it. That said, I do keep a very small number of fish in the hopes that they all have their own safe space to hide when spooked and hopefully this will limit future occurrences.

Why don’t you want a top? I have a rimless as well and the top really takes away the looks. They do have some really nice acrylic ones though. I’m thinking about getting one but they are pricey.
Daughter was freaking out and worried fish would jump out of her new Red Sea E-170, so just put together the Red Sea screen top. It fits perfectly and is flush with the rim. Looks good too. Not very pricy, so you could get one and put it together for your tank.

I lost a six line wrasse, i saved him like 4 times, but that last time he jumped while I was at work, needless to say I added a glass top as quickly as I could. This was approx. 10 years ago now.

What i am concerned about .
I just added a melanurus and a clown fairy wrasse yesterday. My friend that owns reef shop told me he has never lost one jumping out.
I didn’t really want to put screen on top but I don’t want to loose my flatworm exterminator either !
I have been back and forth on whether to buy screen for months.
All wrasses jump. I highly recommend getting a screen lid on there ASAP.

I have a euro braced tank and i lost a large heniochus. Jumped right out onto the living room floor and turned into a potato chip. It was a sad day. We got the fish on our wedding anniversary and he jumped out 2 years and 1 day in our care. My wife thought it was a sign we were getting divorced.

Tops are mandatory. My opinion if you care for it, is that rimless tanks look beautiful until you put the mandatory screen top on it, then it looks bed. Euro brace tanks are built for screen tops, keep splashing out, and are a far superior design. I will never go back to a rimless tank. Euro brace all the way!
