beautiful rock can be taken many ways i know…..
but often i see people with tanks setup for 1 year with amazing rock covered in all kinds of things
and others that are 4,8, or 11 years old even and nothing?? not a spec of coraline no cool sponges?

I want to see some colorful rock and know how long you guys have had it/ what steps you’re taking to get the results you want

Very subjective for sure. Back in '09, had a FOWLR with actual Fiji and Tonga rock, there's nothing that really comes close to that look nowadays.

This is my dry rock start transitioning from sterile into live rock over a year:

Definitely not pretty but hopefully on its way there ;)

More recently I've been seeing retailers offering Australian LR, usually at or around $25/lb. Would love to see some of that lol.. probably as some semblance to all that amazing pacific rock that was available a long time ago
not the moar colorful but here’s some of my aussie rock from tank stop

edit: this was like right after i got it too how it looked out of box and in the tank, i asked for rock with weird stuff and got that
a couple pieces had some corals
didn’t take as many pictures as i should’ve but after i move i plan on getting 5 pounds of their premium aussie live rock and asking for the most colorful pieces & i’ll pick it up in LA with a bucket of saltwater to minimize die off (i’m in san diego so it’s not a far drive)

Wish I had pics of my old rockwork in my previous 90g. It was amazing. I really hope it turns out as well in my upcoming build.....

Probably my only colorful piece. It was in a dark area when I broke down a tank and is now in the cryptic fuge of my new tank. Probably 8 years old or so. I think it a piece of ocean live rock in started my first tank with but I'm not positive.

that looks so cool
i really want to have a cryptic fuge one of these days, only ever had two drilled tanks and they were only temporary but i loved them
made things so easy

Big fan of real live rock from the ocean. I got about 15 lbs aussi live rock that came with lots of deep coralline purple/pinkish. After a couple of years all rock look the same including dry rock. You could not tell a difference except for the weight and some calcerneous algea still alive and well. If you can get real ocean rock get some... now I curse the beautiful coraline... . Not much of picture as corals covers most. Here is some blue-green algea still growing...
