Hey guys!

I'm looking to vinyl wrap some tanks, and wondering where you guys get the material? A sign shop? I'm looking to find a very dark blue if possible, like a midnight blue.

Any tips for application?

I've done every type of paint in the past, and tried car window tint once. The vinyl wrap looks like the best option.

Thanks everyone!

I always used that craft paint with the apple on the front. Paint a blue layer, let it dry for a day or two, then paint a black layer behind it.

Thank you for your reply!

I have tried nearly every kind of paint for tanks, though not that craft paint, which I get is water based, goes on 'thick', and comes in a variety of colors; I will keep that in mind, especially because I know I can get that paint in any color of blue I want. And I really want to try a blue background for my next build, and if I can match the blue in the room the tank will be going in, that is a huge plus. Thanks again for the craft paint suggestion, I'm not ruling that out!

But forgetting about paints for the moment, vinyl wrapping seems like a dream; no mess, no fuss, done in like ten minutes, no runs, drips or errors.... I just don't know where to get the material.

Could someone point me in the right direction please?

Auto "wrap" shops might be able to help you there? Or like you asked about, sign companies sometimes use vinyl. Also, depending on the dimensions, you can get vinyl for those Cricut machines - some with adhesive, some without.

Best bet would probably be amazon.
My new friend, thank you for your reply! Yes, I am familiar with that giant online orange bookstore ;-)

But what material would I need? Most of what I find is for the people that are crafting things with their Circuit machines. Is there not a specific vinyl material I would want to shop for?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your help! Maybe I spoke too soon with my reply just above.....

Am I looking for the stuff I see for those Circuit machines? If so, certainly (Amazon) can't be the best source of this material (not that I need much)?

Is this something I can get locally? I don't live in a large city, but would I search for 'sign shops'?

I have two tanks I'm working on, and wrapping in vinyl seems so fast and easy. If I can't find the material, then I will give a try to the craft paints you mentioned. The one thing I really like about that is that I can get nearly any shade of blue I want, and I want to try a blue background this build.

Thanks to both of you, I appreciate the help!

Could you please post a Link? I'm sorry, maybe I'm making too much this, I'm just trying to get the right material.

Thank you so much!

Found this..
Depending on the size you need it seems to get a bit expensive but just may be exactly what you're looking for. You can also insert your own color codes so you get exactly what you want.

I'd try something like this:

or this:

if it's available in your store. It's cheap so I'd buy 1 of each just to see which I wanted to use. Since they only $1.25 each, if they don't work you're out $2.50.

Your link did not work for me, but I think you are talking about these guys:

If so, those look more like the old school backgrounds they made for freshwater aquaria. I'm looking for more of a solid color. But thank you again for your help!

I've used the limousine tint before worked good
This I think is like the auto tint I've used before. But this time I'm looking for blue, and ideally and very dark midnight blue. Do they do blue auto tint?

Sheesh the replies are coming quickly to this, and I didn't expect that lol! I'm not looking for a "scene" or backdrop. I'm looking to wrap the tank in ideally dark blue or black vinyl.

Am I missing something, or am I not explaining myself well lol!

Thanks for all the help, I do appreciate it, even if I'm a bit dense sometimes ;-)

Yes they do, you may have to search it out. Also try a auto wrap company. They may have scrap to get rid of.

If you go to the top of the page and hit "SHOP", go down to solid colors. They have a bunch of solid color as well as one where you can put in a custom color code for them to make you any color you want.
