Generator to keep the return running is best. Even a HOB needs seasoned and run most of the time to keep some bio filtration alive... even a new one is better than nothing for aeration and water movement but it won't be able to help much if a some things start to die and ammonia starts to rise. If you get a HOB, keep the media part in the sump once the tank gets going again and clean it from time to time.
