The next time I see him in the tank I’ll pull him out for some better photos, I grabbed these right before leaving work so wasn’t able to get more in the moment hahaSome type of nassarius snail or whelk. Maybe @ISpeakForTheSeas might know? Possibly need better pics though.
He shall be known as Lawrence from now on lolI think his name is
Lawrence
Yeah, I'd need a clearer pic of the top of the shell, but it's definitely a carnivore - the question is just if it's a predator or not. Some type of nassarius snail or whelk. Maybe @ISpeakForTheSeas might know? Possibly need better pics though.
So, I don't recognize the snail at the moment, but I can tell you it is a meat-eating variety from the presence of the siphon (the little trunk that sticks out) - the question is really just is it predatory or detritivorous? Finally found him to get updated pics, Im definitely thinking predator as my tectus, astrea, Trochus and even cerith and Nassarius snails are mysteriously dying in here after being fine for weeks prior to him showing up.
I’ll probably be putting him in a sump or I may put in an acclimation box with a “test snail” just to confirm lol.
Thank you, I will definitely be moving it into isolation in the sump or in a sealed acclimation box, I highly suspect it’s been hunting the snails in the tankSo, I don't recognize the snail at the moment, but I can tell you it is a meat-eating variety from the presence of the siphon (the little trunk that sticks out) - the question is really just is it predatory or detritivorous?
Personally, the purple aperture (the opening by where the snail pops out of the shell) and the white shell with rows of black bumps on it remind me of certain kinds of Muricid/Murex snails that eat corals; so, I'm guessing it's a muricid snail of some variety, and in that case it would almost certainly be predatory.
So, personally, I'm leaning toward it not being a keeper; I don't know the species, so I can't say for sure, but I would guess it's predatory toward something in the tank (either snails and bivalves or corals).
