Hello
I am new to the whole saltwater thing and recently I picked up a 170litre system with a sump. I have already purchased a skimmer and I have some filter pads and some media that I can use. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what to add. PS. (I don't have enough space for a refugium but I am planning on adding one later.)

Add rock, salt, water, flow, a bottle of bacteria of your choice, start her.

Only add things (Iam assuming you mean nutrient control stuff) when nutrients continue to rise.
It took years before I needed a fuge, if you go to early, you strip out the good stuff

Keep it stupid simple! (KISS) Something the late, great Jake Adams preached! The simpler and less complicated, the better!

Protien skimmer, ATO, return pump, heater and filter socks and just last week, after three years of manual dosing, I added a doser.

Thanks for the info. Do you think that I need a filter sock. Could I not add filter pads instead.

The only reason I have them is because my sump has a place for them and if I don’t put them it will make a loud tricking sound! If I could take them out I would! The less the better!

I use loosely packed Poly-Fill in sock baskets. Easy to changed and doesn’t clog as quickly. Filter pads usually have less surface area exposed and clog faster. I hate cleaning socks so will never use them again.

Hats really interesting. What's the cleaning method for the sock baskets.

Pull the basket out of the sock holder in my sump, dump out, stuff new poly fil in. I buy a big box at Joanne’s fabric.
