What did I do to my tank? I stirred up the sand bed during a deep clean and omg so much detritus.

I think it will be fine. Fish seem all good. I did this when I was deep cleaning my tank and doing a water change. The detritus is already settling. Also I siphoned out the back chambers for the very first time and I’ve had the tank for a few years lol and this was after I did a massive water change. I’m more so curious to see if anything bad happens but so far so good lol. I just stirred up my sand bed that’s all I did.

Do you have e anything that moves your sand around? Does the water smell okay?

Sulfur dioxide can be released which is toxic to livestock iirc.

If the sand hasn't been disturbed in a while prior to this, I would expect your parameters to swing some.

Now there's a job for a good old Vortex Diatom filter :)
10 minutes later it'd be sparkling

I have a UV Sterilizer well had one. I went to plug it in and it wouldn’t start. The tank is still cloudy but fishies are happy and Mr. Shrimp is swimming and crawling about. I think it will clear up and be fine. And in other news…it’s very possible and by that I 100% clogged the crap out of the sink when I was doing my water changes and may have dumped some sand/tank detritus and possibly some small rocks down the sink. Not on purpose but it caught up with me! And usually when I do it’s small amount and it ends up being fine that is for the sand. Drano and a plunger didn’t work I need to get a snake. And yes I know it’s bad for the pipes. It caught up with me. Ugh.

Oh man do i have a lot of questions now.
Is this kind of filtering something that one should do on a regular basis, so that what happened to Ayden is not happening?
Or should you just never stirr up your sand?
Is this filter the only solution to a cloudy bed? (except for cleaning the sand in the beginning)
Many thanks!

I expect as the water clears, you'll find a thin layer of crud on everything. This accidental tank storming should leave your water crystal clear but a turkey baster may be required to blow off the settled stuff into whatever mechanical filtration you have. If you do have mechanical filtration, now would be a fine time to rinse it out, and maybe in a few hours, and later, and tonight, lol.

Sinks aren’t designed to handle large objects going through them, and usually have a sediment “cup” that will catch them before they go through the pipes to prevent them from being clogged.

If you have such a cup on your sink, you can unscrew it and remove the trash that was accumulated there and it should fix the problem.

Generally, it’s advised to use a toilet for such things, and even than I it’s advised to remove large objects beforehand.

I always stir my sand beds on all of my tanks over the years every time I clean usually every other day or so. Never an issue with waste buildup and to me suspends some goodies for coral feeding and gets all the rest of the junk out of there.

Just be patient. It will clear up.

Frankly, it looks like new, un-rinsed sand has been added to the tank. Did you rinse your sand thoroughly during setup (exception: live sand).

If definitely isn’t lol! It’s live sand and it’s a two and a half year old tank what the photo doesn’t show/what you can’t see is all the detritus and worms and life in the sand. And I stirred a lot of it up which is why it’s so cloudy but clearing.

Glad to hear. It was so satisfying seeing all the detritus and dirt come up also means I need to get some more sand sifters.

Just out of curiosity, what does "deep cleaning" mean exactly, in terms of how much stuff got stirred up?
*I syphon/vacuum my sand AS my water change and lots of crud comes up,,, but through the vacuum,,, so just curious
I mean I really stirred up every inch of the sand with a turkey baster and watched all the stuff come up also I siphoned out my back chambers something I never have done like I did lol.

That’s so many maybe 10-15! It’s only a 20 gallon tank. Because eventually they die and that’s a lot of extra months to feed and a lot of extra pooping butts in a 20 gallon! LOL!
