Hi fellow reefers!

I would love to hear what others dose to their tanks! I only dose Brs soda ash, calcium chloride and magnesium mix for corrections. I also dose bacterias like MB7 and clean and alternate them. I occasionally add others like refresh and microbe lift nothing else beside adding brightwells restor to food which is amino acid and don t do that every time!

Recently I bought a bottle of All for reef and was going to switch to that mainly because I dose by hand and like the idea of only adding one pump. Love to hear from anyone using that as well but I think I will save it though for down the road when my new corals coming in are stable! I just read to many stories since I bought it of people having alk swings ect. Wish I could put corals off but they are owed to me for a long time! I am also considering just retuning and using kalk down the road mainly for the up in ph!

After reading Randy Holmes Farleys articles on dosing 2 part I am now wondering if I should switch from soda ash to sodium bicarb I also am seeing many more reviews of BRS bi carb versus soda ash like 28 to 3 on bicarb! I am also having a hard time keeping my calcium stable lately. I just started dosing about 6 months ago. Long story but I was dosing and quit! Plus since I dose now by hand maybe bicarb is better as to not up ph to much at once!

Should I be dosing anything else if I do biweekly large water changes like essential elements, aminos, iodine, phyto, vitamins ect ect. i have mostly LPS, zoas, shrooms, toadstool. and easier sps. I think I am going to start making smaller wc because of stability issue that never dawned on me until I watched a youtube last night! I usually change 30 to 40 pecent just thinking more is better lol

I definitely need to up ph as well so thinking of adding a hob fuge to control nutrients and have heard it can up ph alot. Not sure if a small one will have that much benefit. Anyone know? I have an 20 aio and a 36 g with 10 gallon sump. and a new 20 long frag tank. If I can get double benefits of a fuge that would be great! I have even considered turning my sump into a fuge with these flow through baffles! Brs has a video about that.

My nitrates are 22 right before biweekly WC. I use BRS high capacity GFO which is up to 85 bucks! YIkes! Labor day sale going on so please help! LOL I also use Fritz blue salt!

I am sorry this is so long and multi questions! LOL. Didnt start out that way haha

Appreciate any advice!

I personally see no advantage to sodium bicarbonate over sodium carbonate or hydroxide, but it is an easy diy if you want to use it.

I discuss other elements here:

I am a little confused. is there another name for soda ash? What exactly is sodium carbonate Is it harmful to hand dose soda ash?? I dont have a ph meter or anything so I have no idea what that is doing to my ph.

I am going to be buying a controller soon since I do plan on kalk more then likely down the road.

Do you believe biweekly water changes are enough for keeping up with trace elements? I do have 2 ICP,S I havnt sent in yet!

Also regarding silcates. I believe I read you said you does them and that Its better to have some diatoms on glass then having a green film or something to that nature.

I only have what I believe is diatoms on my newer acrylic frag rack and the surrounding glass is worse then the rest of the glass! Its problematic because it has killed off zoas that I have put on the racks!

My other tank had the same problem until coraline took over the racks but some reason coaraline wont grow in one of my tanks!

I also cant seem to get my calcium up to 400! I was dosing more alk then calciun then it was equal and now I need much more calcium! Could it be precipitating out? I do dose in the same spots by wavemakers, but very slowly and an hour apart starting with calcium.

Sorry I know I ask a lot of questions! Thanks so much for helping me!

I’m not sure why BRS has been pushing the name soda ash except to sound different and exotic, but it is the same chemical as sodium carbonate, also known as washing soda or baked baking soda.

There’s nothing harmful about hand dosing it, though if you add large amounts, spreading out it or any alk addition is desirable.

Water changes will help supplement stuff, but unless you are doing the water changes for other reasons anyway, it’s an expensive way to dose anything.

I would not worry about dosing silicate at first. Its a second level activity.

Precipitation is never an explanation for unbalanced demand since it consumes both alk and calcium in the same ratio that corals use it.

How much alk and calcium are you dosing now in dKH and ppm per day?
