What are some methods for maintaining a reef tank that have changed over the years?

Every year, there are new methods that come out for helping us maintain our reef tanks. Maybe a new scientific discovery is made that makes something easier for us, or maybe a product is produced that helps "automate" methods. I am wondering what are some methods that have changed over the years for keeping up with a reef tank?

Refugiums although they were around in the 80s but not called refugiums. Just caulerpa in a tote plumbed to the main or or wet dry. Scrubbers were a thing then too. Ozone gaining popularity again. Knew of that in the 90s.

Perhaps not so much what has changed vs getting to learn old tricks again although buying shiny new gear never stopped any industry and this hobby sure loves it's new gimmicks such as roller mats vs just capturing that so called crud and letting a tote full of macroalgae process it naturally. Also solves pH by removing co2 vs needing kalk to raise it which chemically does the same act. Perhaps we need less new ideas :thinking-face:
