If given the choice between the two, I would lean heavily toward the Canon XT.

If the primary use for the macro lens you are looking at is to take pictures in your reef tank, I really urge you to look at the Nikkor 105mm macro instead. I think you would be much happier with the results you will get. If the cost is an issue, check out the Sigma 105mm with a Nikon mount as an alternative.

Bryce

Canon Rebel XT & Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro Lens.

If you want some real close up pics, then unless you get you a nice macro lens to go with the new camera, IMO it is pointless.

While it is true that the S2 uses Nikon/Nikkor lenses, the technology in that camera is pretty much obsolete. That is why it was replaced with the S3. Even though I use a Nikon D-100 (The camera the S2 was modeled after) and get good results, the results I achieve with newer models with up to date technology is much better. This is really evident using the TTL feature.

In addition I think the S2 is kind of clunky feeling in the hands and because it needs two different batteries to operate, the weight is an issue.

The Canon XT and Xti is much more comfortable to hold, the technology is newer and in my mind a better option.

On the other hand, if you already have a bunch of Nikkor lenses and a SB flash the S2 makes some sense if the price is right. Personally, if that were the case, I would go with a D-70 or D-80 instead.

Ahem...

The only reason I suggested the Canon is that Nikon wasn't one of the choices listed in the question. :p

I have a feeling that the voting on this poll was done in Chicago!

My chads were hanging...

Rebel XTi. Just got it, so have a nice learnign curve. Planning on either the 100mm 2.8 Canon or a Sigma lens.

the only reason i went with the d200 is like with anything, buy the best thing you can afford
at the time i WAS going to get a D80 with the 18-200VR lens but soon found out its a highly sought after lens and i didnt want to wait for a lens that no one knew when it was coming in so i decided to just get the D200 for now and get the 18-200 when its more readily available
im still on the fence about the 60 and 105VR macro lenses
ive seen pics with both used and the 60 looks pretty good
but then again birthdays are the time to ask for things right?
so the 105 for my birthday and the 18-200 for christmas?
oh and i also want a camera that will fill out my entire hand and not something that my fingures would be falling all over the place with
thats another reason i like the D200, bigger body for grip
