I need your opinion on using a motorized ball valve on a return line to achieve the following.
My 112-gallon display is connected to a 25-gallon sump by 1" flexible tubing. I do water changes through a sump by draining about 10% of the display volume through a return line. The position of the return loc-line nozzles controls the level of drained water in the sump. It's done this way to avoid draining too much water from the display exposing a bunch of SPSs that sit very high due to my far-from-being-perfect aquascape in a very shallow tank. It works well and I am happy with this setup.
The problem that I am having is during the feeding. I'd like to be able to kill the circulation pumps as well as the return pump without draining lots of water into the sump. Syphon hole will not work for my setup (see above)
I was thinking about adding a motorized UPVC normally open 1" ball valve that will be connected to a WIFI hydros plug. I will close this valve for feeding and will keep it open when I do my water changes.

I am sure that was done before but I could not find any info/feedback. What are the potential issues with such a setup? I understand that saltwater will kill this valve at some point but it should not lead to a flood disaster if it is stuck in an open or closed position (I think :))
What do you think? Is there some other less technical way to get that done?
Thanks

A in-line check valve would hold the level in the display with the return off. They have maintainable ones with clean outs so to speak as they do need to be cleaned every now and again. You could put a tee fitting above that valve with a hose connected for water changes. It would just need a ball valve or something to manually open when changing water. A lot cheaper than motorized ball valves. Definitely not the techno cool factor of motorized bells and whistles though.

That was my plan A but mechanical check valve scares me
I would prefer normally open state
