Hey guys my new 125 gallon arrived and will be getting it setup this week. I need advice on how to go about transferring my tanks.

I am going from 2 tanks, 1 biocube 32 gal and a 40 gallon tank, put into one 125 gal tank, to make one new ecosystem.
My current residence is being sold and I am moving into an apartment. How do I go about transferring them?

I got all new live sand, will use both tanks live rock, and my LFS gave me some “Seed” to start the process. My issue is my fish wont have any hiding spots etc once I remove the liverock to go into the new tank to cycle.. is there anyway to transfer them all into the new tank same day? If I use old water from the tanks too? Whats my best bet here? I also have 50 gallons of premade water I use for wayer changes ready, I also have limited time before I have to be out, so I cant cycle this thing for months like I did for my current setups.

I have two clowns, hippo tang, inverts, and a few coral going with.

Thanks for anyone who can help.

Side note: the apartment part is not an issue what so ever, will be on ground level and I thought it all out first. I am also the PM. Its just a 2 unit house not some huge complex

As long as the new tank is heated and the water is moving, you should be able to just transfer everything straight over. Just remember that you will need to account for the addition of the old rocks displacing water.

the live rock holds your beneficial bacteria, you should be able to put everything in the new tank and skip the cycle. just obviously make sure your tank is heated and your pump is on

As long as you keep your live rock submerged in saltwater during move you won’t have a cycle. Just transfer everything over and if you don’t have enough water to fill the entire tank use a powerhead and heater until you have time to completely fill it.

I might not trust their 'seed' - I might go with Fritz bacterial products. I think you might be overthinking. You can for sure - transfer everything on the same day - I always say - test test (ammonia) - if you are doing a tank transfer. Short answer to your question - yes you can

That's weird

Moving into an apartment with a 125g from a 25 and 40 tanks

Most people go the other way around

Hope it's a ground floor apartment, with concrete foundation

Good luck getting that past the property manager

GL

(Maybe a 3:30 AM move in)

maybe he owns it, but as someone in property management, someone can pass a fish as an emotional support animal as easily as someone can put a service harness on a dog and walk into a nail salon.

As others mentioned, when transferring a whole system (even if it is a new tank), youre transferring the bacteria together with the live rock. So you’ll not have to go through cycling the tank again.
You’ll likely have a few weeks of algae growth that will die off by itself, but that’s all.

I did 2 transfers and one just start with live rock, all were done successfully same day.

One thing you need to put emphasis on is being prepared - have a precise plan and follow it, go through every step beforehand to make sure you don’t forget anything and when the time to execute comes, it’ll go much smoother, with no surprises that you weren’t expecting.

Its better to have one tank in the apartment imo right now and I am upgrading for my tang mostly. And I am the property manager so it works fine, and it will be a solid floor on ground level. Making a small man cave room for myself.

Exactly what I was thinking.

A 125g in an apartment is not something I'd do. If it ain't allowed and disaster occurs, I could see one being held liable for damages (whether it's allowed or not, actually).

lol I have a 206g + a 90g systems on the 10th floor..

It really isn’t a big deal if you bring in an engineer to approve it, and have the insurance company cover any possible damage that may occur.

Haha I honestly wouldn’t dare doing anything close to this without an approval from an engineer, but he actually said that I can put any length across a specific supporting wall, as long as the depth of the tank stays the same.

And the other tank is sitting against an armored wall of a bomb shelter (yes, we have to have them by law at all apartments in Israel), which is considered the safest location to place a tank, and many reefers do so around here.

Beautiful thing with the insurance is that they’re not only cover 3rd party damage, but also the cost of the tank itself if anything happens to it. So that’s nice, though costly.

Wow thats really cool to learn man. And never met someone from Israel. Also cool. And sucks you need a bomb shelter in the first place but atleast theres a positive side to it haha. Nice man. Im curious if Ill even enjoy a bigger tank, and if I do looks like ill be like you one day or else ill have 20 nanos.

Haha that’s a good point, we should always look at the bright side of things instead of focusing on the other

And yes, you’ll most definitely enjoy the bigger tank, it’s far less hassle to take care of one system than multiple separate ones (I went the other way after 16 years of having just one), and your new tank is also within the “golden range” in what I call the stability bell curve - it ain’t too small to easily fluctuate, but also not too big to make it too hard to influence when needed.

But be aware - after multiple tank upgrades I can surely relate to what I always heard others say - no matter how big the tank is, you’ll quickly run out of space :grinning-face-with-sweat:

Hey man sorry to start this thread again I just had a question should I use all new water or keep some of the old from one of the tanks?
