My tank has been running about 7 months and it has matured slowly but very nicely. It’s a 90 gallon with a 55 gallon sump/fuge. I only have a yt damsel, 4 large bar gobies and two clownfish. I feed at least double what my fish can eat in an effort to gently raise the nutrients.

I started out a few months ago with 80 or so baby trochus snails. Now I have thousands of them. They seem to thrive in the sump/fuge. I’m not 100% these are trochus snails because they seem to max out a little bigger than a bb (0.177”) before they die by getting covered in green algae or choked out by coralline on their shells. They don’t broadcast spawn like every other trochus ive seen. They lay donut shaped egg sacs. Here is my first thread on them. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-early-can-trochus-snails-breed.466745/ I have a video of them laying eggs on the second page. These are starting to become a liability to my float switches. C4DD573E-6D26-4A6C-B291-3957AF3FBBF3.jpeg

A couple months back i noticed a handful of baby margarita snails. I have 6-8 that are a good centimeter across and I’ve seen a couple smaller ones from a second spawning.

~A month ago I found a couple small conical shaped snails that looked strikingly similar to my nassarius snails. I ended up removing them in case they were whelks. Well the past couple nights as the lights go blue i noticed all my nassarius snails gathering up in the rocks. I initially assumed a large margarita snail died in the rocks. Last night i noticed the rocks were COVERED in eggs. Easily an 8”x8” area. I removed my mechanical filtration to give these eggs a good chance.

I’ve owned reef tanks for 13+ years and never had a snail breed. Now I have several thousand snails. What could I possibly be doing so right?

Woah!! I think you created a gold mine.
Are you selling any?
You could be a good supplier to the lfs !!!
Haha I’ve considered it but so far the trochus snails seem to die off before getting to a marketable size. The margarita snails are easily 4x the size and are doing really well. Unfortunately those aren’t breeding like rabbits.

They seem to thrive in my sump. I have a feeling that my bioball nutrient trap gives the snails a great refuge after hatching. The cup above with a few hundred snails is about half the snails in my fuge. I moved them to the display.

Super cool, you actually started out with more snails than I did though XD I noticed yesterday a few of these little things in my tank that had shells, moving around, and then i noticed the feelers in the front! My margarita snails made babies! Only like 4 of them, but i mean hey, thats $20 made right there. and a free cleanup crew upgrade ;)

Two years later the “micro trochus” have vanished. Not sure why but i’m glad they did. The margaritas are still reproducing, just fast enough to replace the handful my wrasses pick off

I just found some baby nassarius snails tonight... and just before that I saw my hermits releasing hundreds of larvae into the water! I love this hobby!

Dude, they covered that rock crevice! That's a first for me. Did they get too numerous for your tank, or are they working out for you?
