Hey everyone,

I moved a new torch coral in last week (back right, purple with pink tips) and I just noticed my dragon soul ( middle, right hand side) is retracted and changed color. Photo below for reference.

IMG_6336.jpeg

Is this cause for concern? From my understanding torch coral can touch, but indo and Australian varieties can have issues. Frankly, I prefer my dragon soul this color. Just want to make sure that one isn’t going to die from battle.

Thank you,

Andrew

I have had torch corals undergo color variations also as they are in close groups. You are correct that most of the time torches are fine together but sometimes different regions don't get along. I was under the impression that my torches color variation was more of a light effect then proximity to another torch but who knows.

Yeah I keep the tank pretty blue and a lower intensity. I had REALLY bad hair algae last year, decreased all the lighting and won the battle with the hair plague.

A few minutes after the photo, the Dragon Soul became so recessed it was more skeleton than torch coral. I decided to move the new purple and pink tip coral a little further away, and the Dragon Soul is back out and happy.

Just wondering if I should leave a larger gap between torch coral in future, happy that I didn’t lose another torch.

Thanks for your help,

Andrew

Its best to leave room for growth. My torches are like 20 heads now and huge. Wiping out my favia quite a distance away to.

I have heard that as well, that torches from different localities may not get along. I have 4 torches together, 3 are growing well but one seems to be retracting. . . wondering if that is what’s going on. I may try moving my cotton candy (the unhappy one)

One of my Indo torches definitely zapped my Aussie. I moved it once I realized what happened, but it died a slow death over the next 2 weeks, despite KFC dip, etc. People say they are fine together, but I disagree. :(

Sorry to hear about your torch, it sucks losing something so beautiful.

I’m going to have to allow more rock space for torch coral, because they’re like Pokémon…. I gotta catch them all!

Holy moly VintageReefer! What are the names of the yellow torch with blue tips, and the yellow/green with green tips? Looks like a 24k and a banana, but I’m not a coral expert

Also have one towards the middle of my tank, was sold as a Malaysian banana. It’s very similar coloration to 1 (short stem banana) but the tentacles are longer and thinner

lol what a collection!! Thank you for the easy to understand names and number.

Something very interesting, your knicks looks VERY different from mine. I know it’s hard to see, but my left hand torch is a knicks. I’d trade an arm and a leg to have it look like yours!!

To photograph the tank and have pictures come out the way the tank looks in real life you need to use blue led lights + an orange clip on lens

C05C8E9A-0EEA-4248-8C7C-7457F00FAAEE.png

That’s the one I use. There are a few lens options included and for my setup I found two combinations that give results true to in person viewing

Setup 1 - max fluorescence both in person and photos
Blue + royal blue + violet - 50%
Red green white - 0%
Orange filter lens

Setup 2 - more daylight look, brighter, easier to see and photograph fish and darker areas, more of overall violet look
Blue + royal blue + violet - 50%
Red green - 0
White - 3-10% depending on your preference

I can’t tell how your knicks looks in person Do the tentacles have gold on one half and purple on the other half?

Honestly some days my knicks seems 95% purple. I’ve had to make some changes to really bring out the gold

Here’s my knicks about 4-6 months ago I was worried I was going to lose all the gold

Thanks for the information and settings! My knicks is mostly purple with greenish ends, doesn’t seem to change very often. The gold is your knicks is stunning, such a cool color combination.

I’m definitely going to have to get a banana torch, I could stare at yours all day. There’s something special about the movement and color of a torch, obsessed is an understatement!!

I forgot I also have a cotton candy but I would avoid unless you have space. It’s the only torch I’ve had that has sweepers double the size of the tentacles normal length. Others have reported this also. He’s killed two corals I honestly thought were out of reach so far

I have to dig to get a sweeper pic, I’ll post when I find it. Beautiful neon green though. Just needs a lot of room

I’ve actually got a cotton candy, and really like the green and pink colors. I’ve got all my torches together and well away from any other coral, I’ve heard horror stories about torches destroying other coral.
