I don't really see the point if them. I've never used one. Ask your self why you use it.

I always run uv. Helps minimize algae on glass and seriously cuts down in ich risk.

Ok, so i never have algae problems, and i never have ich problems. I keep my tank healthy so if I have a problems with ich i keep the fishes heathy enough to take care of it on their own. If you keep your fish healthy, you don't need uv.

There are a lot UV sterilizers on the market that are not efficient, most of the suggested flow and or pumps provided do not allow enough contact time to be truly effective. That is why there are mixed feelings on using them. They are definitely proven to help with algae issues, but when it comes to reef tanks there are lots of other options to battle against algae. When it comes to ponds and freshwater, people swear by them. I don't think having one hooked up along with a fuge will be detrimental by any means. But if you have a small fuge, you have to question how effective it will be on its own as well.

I have a clarity plus 250 gph in a 25 gallon fugue with miracle mud 3and a half in deep bed and a reef octopus 150-d . I have not had to many problems with algae I was using it for the overall health of the fish and to significantly reduce the risk of ich . But I was at the LFS yesterday and he was telling me that it is bad for the system food wise i have a lps dominated tank. but i do supplementary feeding alternating between marine snow, oyster feast and phyto feast. Well thanks guys appreciate it

I have a uv sterilizer, the algae growth in my refugium is pretty slow, along with everywhere else in my tank. I got mine to help with ich, I have seen several tanks in person with beautiful ich prone fish that everybody else swears is next to impossible to keep...the thing they all had in common is a uv sterilizer. My yellow belly blue regal tang and powder blue tang both thrive in my system and show no signs of ich, but did when I first added them even after a four week copper treatment in quarantine. Some people will get on their pedestal and say that they don't work or are pointless, but I just consider that garbage unless they show me proof (good solid proof, not just Joe blow says so). I have seen it with my own eyes and experienced on my system, they make an impact if installed and ran properly. Are they needed for every system, no...but they do have an application in the reefing community.

O,h and to answer your question, it might make a slight difference but it should not clean out your system.

Continuation

People that come by and see my tank that have experience with reef tanks ask me how I keep my tank so clean (side, back glass, sand, and rocks) I tell them I scrape the glass once every other week, and attribute a lot to my uv sterilizer and skimmer. I literally scrape the glass every other week, and really don't need to, but the little bit of algae that grows bothers me.

I run UV and a fuge. I run the UV mainly for ich too. I know many say it doesn't work but in 2 separate tanks over a couple years i added the UV after an ich outbreak in the hope of helping kill the ich in the water column and never had a problem again. I'm not gonna argue whether it works or not but it does give me piece of mind. Agree with keeping the fish healthy but when you add a new fish, quarantine or not there's a chance its going to get picked on and stress.....oh, lets not start the debate of whether all fish carry ich and it only comes out when stressed :) I have no issues growing stuff in the fuge.

I run a 57watt uv myself, running 200-300gph through it. I wouldn't be able to keep the fish I have without it. I also have a monster fuge.
