Monday's $50.00 Gift Card Giveaway.

How did you get started in the hobby? What inspired you to begin your reef-keeping journey?

Let us know to be included in our Monday Giveaway. :)

"I grew up with an older brother who was 16 years older than me and he always had a saltwater tank, I loved it growing up. Then as a teen, I got my scuba certification and spent many years scuba diving where I fell in love with the underwater world. Finally, I set up my own tank after I purchased my first house and haven't looked back. It's been 11 years."

I, as many of others, grew up with reef tanks. My dad was big into it and I would sit with him and help him with the cleaning. I didn't mind cleaning so much as a kid, now cleaning is a pain. He taught me a lot, although so much has changed since then. Anyway, once I got into a house of my own I knew I wanted to do a reef tank and started saving money and collecting equipment. Now we have 4 marine tanks and each one of them brings me joy. When my dad visits we have switched roles, he helps me out and is blown away but all the tech there is now.

I started reefing when i was 10, after many years of freshwater fish keeping. I wanted the colorful fish found in the saltwater hobby! Now iʻm 13 and have two tanks a 225 gallon fowlr tank, and a 55 gallon reef! Both tanks are doing great right now and I am currently planning a 3rd tank! Here are some pictures of my tanks!

A lot has changed over the years in the reef-keeping industry for sure. That is such a great thing to be able to still share this wonderful hobby with your dad today.

How did you get started in the hobby? What inspired you to begin your reef-keeping journey?
I think I took the traditional route of getting into the hobby. As a kid, I had a 50-gallon FW system that I absolutely loved. I was so proud o that tank and it was up and running for years. I think I was 15 back then. After that tank I didn't have another tank as I went to college and then moved out to Cali.

Eventually after roughly 10 years, when I came back I started up another FW system. But eventually, I kinda learned what I could and it wasn't much of a challenge anymore. That is when I decided it was time to take the next step. I always knew I loved all the fish in the Saltwater section of the LFS, and I always thought "Wow, that would be amazing to have a small slice of ocean in my house." Yet, I didn't pull the trigger as I simply wasn't in a place in my life where a higher maintenance tank and the cost weren't in the cards.

So when I finally moved into our new home after getting married and I would guess 20+ years after starting up my first FW tank, I decided it was time to finally start up my Reef tank. The amount of tinkering and making and learning and simply enjoying has been non-stop now for 6 years. In fact, my entire life is now based around Salt Water Fish as I run a small company that QT's fish for folks. I can't imagine my life without my tanks now, even though it's a daily grind I LOVE WHAT I DO!
