I have been thinking on this recently. From my own experience and those who came to the shop I managed, euphyllia seem to do better in tanks with moderate stocking and no skimmer.

I think part of the reason is skimmers today are so effective that sometimes when they are run 24 7 they can strip a tank.

A second reason I've been considering is that because they pull out so much pelagic bacteria this void creates an opening for brown jelly disease.

There could be many other reasons for this but whenever I move struggling torches from a tank with a skimmer to one without they seem to perk up

I would love to here yalls thoughts and experiences.

I personally only recommend skimmers in tanks where oxygen make be a concern, if they are run only at night, and if other means of filtration such as a refugium are not working well enough. I personally value the bacteria in the water column and find UV and skimmers to be counted intuitive if you are keen on keeping filter feeders.

Interesting theory.

I do skim and have 3 torches and 4 hammers.

They have all either split or starting to BUT I have been running sockless for a while.

I have a good skimmer as well Reef Octopus Elite 200-INT 8"

It might be a case of what works for some may not others and also nutrient import differences

If I'm somewhat right I think a big way to counteract is just feeding heavier
