They will eat asternia stars, but are not very nutritious for them. They can decimate a very large population of asternias rather quickly. Think of them as you would a mandarin with pods in how they would decimate an asternia population rather quickly.

What they actually eat is the tube feet of the star(the nutritious part for them), and asternias do not have a lot of tube feet for them to keep them sustained long term.

Also if you have urchins, they are on the menu, and would probably be taken out before the asternias. They have the same tube feet as stars.

I used to buy mine chocolate chip stars, but they eventually perished after a few years, and I have never bought another.

Beautiful, and interesting creatures if your willing to do whats needed for them long term.

EDIT:
They are also very cryptic, so don't think your going to see it very often.

My urchins are currently quite happily alive :)

And it’s not really denting the population, you’d be surprised how slowly these guys work their magic.

Pintail has only been in the box for like 48 hours. Eating like a pig, and kinda just hanging out swimming. Spent almost a month in copper and in a small box at the fish store, and I think it just wants to be free.

Tomini tang hasn’t gone up to visit, but I think the mirror will make him hate seeing himself more than he hates seeing the pintail.

You guys think you would release it?

That’s enough convincing for me. Will do it now.

I’m gonna set them free now, and if tomini starts acting up I’ll sic my possum wrasse on him.

And for the videos, I uploaded them to Streamable. Videos on streamable seem to embed in threads on here really well.

After being so excited to finally receive my replacement Melanarus (actually 2) from dr. Reef after the fiasco of being sent a lunare by mistake. Both died. In two seperate tanks. Both properly acclimated. Received last thursday. The first was dead by Saturday morning and the second larger was dead this afternoon. I’m at a loss for getting wrasses. To be honest I know the aquatics manager at petco and got in an absolutely beautiful carpenters. It’s amazing to me that the petco stock has been healthier and hardier than a “quarantined” specimen. Just venting because this has been an almost 4 month ordeal.
Sucks. I think part of it is this miserable hot weather isn't helping anything. Had a order of corals go kaput as I wasnt home to accept them (emergency call for gig #2). Box sat on my stoop a few hours and just about all the acros/tenius went RTN within a day :(.

I didnt fight with the vendor because it isnt their fault I wasnt around to received it on the nose when it arrived. Not saying its your situation, but maybe try shipping when its cooler out?

Your ‘she’ is actually a surprisingly mature yet young male :)

Female Isosceles look like this.

Not my photo… if it was, I’d be snapping a great photo of my finifenmaa although tomorrow I’ll be getting my proper camera out again and seeing if anyone wants to play.

Valid point on the heat! Here in louisiana it is like the suns arm pit. Thankfully my order only sat on the doorstep for like 6 minutes before my wife got it. But who knows about the transit temperatures.

Tomini may chase a bit as mine did. They will find their place though. Make sure the top is snug because this wrasse is one of the best escape artists. Especially going over the weirs.

Good info! I fall into the trap of looking at it being smaller than the others and my primitive brain goes “awe, sweet little girl.” I’ll have to refer to it as “little guy” now haha.

Thinking about it now, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a female pintail, and certainly not one that has been collected.

Just set loose about 30 minutes ago.

Little bit of chasing, but the others have mostly been distracted by their own reflections and the flood of food in the tank.

That would be my worry, I bet that fish saw triple digit heat at somepoint and that will do them in.

I order some Corals last month from Cherry Corals during AZ 110 plus temps. Todd emailed an we made arrangements to have them sent to a UPS facility. Where I went by picked at their will call, All Corals shipped well. Might be an option for you in the future

Only issue with that is my local UPS yard (walkable distance) only allows will call pickup between 2-4 p.m.. ALL overnight from UPS ends up in the truck and at my door by 10 a.m.

I never have issues with deliveries, it was a outlier due to having to go to work on my day off and its hot as hell out @ the same time when the delivery got there. I'd be worse off trying to pick it up from will call.
