If you want a tang I recommend a tomini or alike
I don't :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Bristletooth aren't ugly but nor are they pretty. I like the Achilles, the powders, and the sailfins but not that much. The achilles is the only one I would say is a true stunner but I know they are a PITA in basically every way so.... I basically have every other type of fish and i don't need a grumpy disease magnet.

Achilles is my number one. My last one was a good boy as with my powder blue. I will probably be adding another Achilles soon. Achilles I think you have a better chance of them behaving compared to the powders.

My lfs laughed the day I gave him a murdering Melanurus for a powder blue. The powder never killed a fish but the Mel did lol

Those Achilles are beautiful, they are on the short list of Acanthurus for me. Lavender tangs, Atlantic Blue and Convicts (If I can find one that will live) are about it for those I'd consider.

Those PBT's, clown and sohals are terrors and ich magnets.

Edit: I do like the bristletooth tangs, I dont like the prices. Wouldn't mind a white tail foe my cube, but I refuse to play the prices as of late.

I usually keep 2-3 tangs and they have always peacefully coexisted with my wrasses even eating Nori at the same time. I currently have a purple, powder blue and have had hippos. My 200g tank makeup has pretty much always been a pair of clowns, 2 tangs, 5 or so dwarf angels, a group of anthias, a few misc. fish and lots of wrasses. If there's any chasing or violence going on its usually tang to tang with the purple being the perpetrator.

Achilles and ich is like a powder as far as ich and such.
I do qt and careful what goes in my tank bit more relaxed approach as I don’t like meds much. My powders and Achilles were my tell tale of ich/velvet slips in so I could deal with the issue.

That said once day after cheating qt on last fish my Achilles showed a little ich. No big deal or reason to panic. A week and a half wrasse dead. Ich wasn’t the problem nor did any tang show velvet but it hit all wrasses in the gills. I was warned but stupid and didn’t listen fast enough

What is spoke about parasites is more of most likely but not rule.

Love your tang choices too. Many wrasse keepers keep tangs away from there wrasse collection for stress and disease reasons and can’t blame anyone

My issue right now is my foxface is being an absolute coward again and hiding in a corner. Its massive and by far the biggest normal fish in the tank but it lets itself be bullied by my maroon clown. Weird how tangs are bold but their herbivorous counterparts are such wimps.

Then they should not touch the fish. Those people should leave it to the places that care and know the animals.
Put it this way:
You guys have said we seem to get better fish this end of the hobby. 3 Hemis we’re ordered in and all 3 came… we only have 1 that is surviving and even then it’s only adapted to the darkness Ive had it under. The other 2 died due to shipping stresses and also infection.

So who to buy from then? As much as we think the process of importation should be transparent it isn't and we both know that. Frankly its one of the biggest failings of the ornamental fish industry imho.
I agree. Previous LFSs I’ve worked in always said ‘hide any dead fish’. I personally disagree with this, people deserve to see we go through the same issues and shouldn’t be shunned away from the difficulties of importing and even just getting from the distributor.

A lot of it started before shipping. Hemi’s stress very easy and need to be in big natural systems. They aren’t a fish that we should collect in my eyes. A lot of infections this year with them and then they shipped many boxes with pvc. We won’t say how bad that worked. Also collecting males and mature ones is a loss. It’s for money and people handling them. Some of those fish sit months in 8x8 cubes with multiples flashed and not moving. That is killing the fish!

The big problem we face is we can go very public to have things changed or non tank people will shut down all importing. It’s like the puppy mills in USA but that we could fight and make public.

If I understand you properly, tangs should be banned. I will gladly grab my pitchfork for that fight.

As I said in another post, who needs tangs when you have angels and rabbits to replace them?!

I can very much understand that. Rabbits not my top pick over a few tangs but the angels for sure. You always had good taste with fish

Im with you, the only other tang I’ll have aside from a bristletooth will be an Achilles. The others are stunning but they’re all species many don’t know about as they just get huge I mean just one I’d love is the YellowFin (A. xanthopterus).

Currently I’m sat at 3 angels and 9 wrasses. If I didn’t have clams in my nano I’d have 4 angels but instead that’s going wrasse dominated and 3 gobies with one dragonet.
