Hello all,
I picked up this WB 20 Cube back in June for $100 which also included the 20lb scape. The front glass had a few scratches on it that I tried to fix myself, but I was not able to get decent looking after many tries with sandpaper and Cerium Oxide. I was able to get the large scratches out, but could not get it buffed back. I think I was holding back on putting too much pressure on it. As I was taking it out to the trash, my son asked if the glass can be replaced. So, I decided to go that route. I removed the front pane and took it to a local glass shop. For a little project, that may fail, I decided to go with regular glass as it was only $35 compared to $90 for Starphire. It was a straightforward process and not difficult at all. Masked the edges and squeezed out silicon, placed the panel on, and taped in place. 48 hours later, removed the tape and water tested, good as new. I can see a slight difference in clarity, but not enough to make it look bad. I seeded the scape in a storage bin starting in June partly with water change water, fresh mixed, and a few pieces of rock from my Evo. I re-scaped my Evo a few months in and added some more seed rock. I did have a lid on it and am unsure if that affected anything. I only had a small pump in the bin to circulate water and only did one water change and did not test it at all. Over the last year, I have learned so much and a lot of that learning has been to weed through massive amounts of truth, hearsay, and misinformation. With my Evo, I started with CaribSea life rock and Dr. TIm's one and only. I'm sort of experimenting with starting this up. I rinsed the sand for 30+ minutes and started with no sand clouds, which was nice. I used Imagitarium Pacific Ocean water to start. This was much easier to do as I only have two buckets and a 20gal freshwater Brute. I was a little shocked that this tank only took 15.3 gallons, but with 35lbs of displacement, I guess it's about right. I took an ammonia reading, API it came out to .25(shocker, I know!) I did dose ammonia to 2ppm and will wait to see if I need to dose some bac or not. Will be keeping my lights off for now and if the ammonia comes down will add two of the 4 fish in a week or so.
I'm excited to finally get this up and running as waiting for 6 months has been a bit awkward for me, as I normally dive in. Having my Evo up helped a lot, and now that it is on cruise control, I can concentrate on this one. It is still a little intimidating thinking about having two tanks on different floors of the house, but I like the challenge and love that I can create two different reefs.
