Another year, another ban, and this time its LPS corals from Australia. As of the 11th of January 2022 the import of wild-collected Duncanopsammia axifuga, Catalaphyllia jardini, Euphyllia ancora, paraancora and glabrescens is banned across the whole of the European Union and its 27 member countries. So that’s no more Duncans, Elegance, walling Hammers, branching…

Least the uk isn’t in the eu anymore hopefully we will avoid this ban… fingers crossed

UK Queensland coral ban

The UK is no longer part of the EU and since late last year has been subject to its own Aussie coral import ban, but this time only on hard corals coming from the Queensland fishery. The UK’s own CITES department, the JNCC, aired on the side of caution while a non-detriment finding was being sought on the Great Barrier Reef. To them, no recent data to provide a positive opinion or no data at all means an effective negative opinion is formed until evidence is provided to prove otherwise. Imports from Western Australia have been allowed to remain, however.”

“But in the meantime it’s no more Aussie Gold Torch entering Europe, making captive Torch stocks much more valuable on the continent. And no more of any corals from the Great Barrier Reef for the UK, so no more Scolies, Gold Torch or Acan Lords. The European reefing scene just got a whole lot less colorful. “

Maybe if they stopped trawler fishing instead of blaming the hobbyist they are destroying the reefs not us!
It’s both. You can’t say our hobby has no impact. Just because it’s not the biggest cause doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter or that our hobby shouldn’t work towards a more sustainable relationship with wild reefs. It’s like the people who say ‘why should we do anything about climate change when X country isn’t doing anything’, at some point someone has to be the adult in the room and model the change we want to see.

So why do you participate in a hobby that you consider is contributing towards destroying the reefs ? The hobby has minimal impact compared to commercial fishing it’s literally day and night in comparison! Perhaps you should take a stand or knee and give up your tank if you feel so strongly. As for climate change lol! Myth!

Ok, I see there’s no rational discussion to be had here.

i am hoping that Australia will provide the proper documents and the ban will get lifted
That seems to be the elephant that they didn't touch. What is the reason Australia has not provided the data for that long? And is there an expectation that that will be happening in the restriction would be lifted?

IMHO, ABOUT TIME!

This kind of change couldn't come fast enough. Australian "wholesalers" are literally profiting from robbing mother nature of the most beautiful creatures on this planet that are already in grave danger from warming seas. And btw, this kind of change will not effect the average hobbyist that buys frags from their reef clubs. This will only effect the people who don't give a **** about corals, only profit.
