I have just acquired a secondhand 760l plumbed tank with a sump. There is one Eiheim pump of unknown size, nothing written on it anywhere. The sump has a 400x400x300mm removeable section filled with bio material which is sealed in. I have no experience with sumps at all so this will be interesting. I live at the bottom of South Australia and the next landfall to our South is Antarctica. I think the average sea temp here is around 16C-19C in Summer and about 10C-14C in Winter. The tank will be 100% local as we have one of the highest number of seaweed/macro algae species in the world. Many of them under 150mm long which makes them ideal for a tank. They can be legally harvested in small amounts which makes it easy as well. Also a very good supply of fresh seawater. No mixing. My first priority will be a stand. I am a former furniture maker so this will be no drama, just the time off work to do it. I made several stands on order years ago including an 18'x4' x4' which was 18" off the floor. An interesting day when the tank was installed. Don't expect great things in a short space of time. I am self employed and work 6-7 days a week. The first bit of advice I am seeking is to do with lighting. The tank will be in the sunroom facing North, which in the Southern hemisphere is where the sun is, so it will be getting a huge amount of natural light although no direct sunlight. I will be using T5's and I am looking for a supplier in Oz if anyone can recommend anywhere. My online search has been fruitless at this stage. I would like a bank of at least 4 tubes at 1,200 long, preferably that will sit on the tank. Cheers everyone. It starts here.

I have a livestock recommendation for once the tank is established a bat sea star if you can get one!:) Although not local to Australia I just read further. So I assume it’s going to be more temperate/warmer? Or are you planning on an cold/artic tank with a chiller and no heaters?

More the temperate I would say in the 10-19C range. Too dang cold to swim in.

Hey mate, T5 bulbs are getting a bit hard to reliably source in Aus so you might have to consider LED. A freshwater fixture would grow the macros well. I think you will need a chiller to keep things at South Oz ambient sea temp when it heats up down there in summer. They’re a pricey piece of kit but you can get them secondhand on Gumtree. Otherwise you could always plumb your return through the beer fridge!

Best of luck with the set up.
