If I decide to use a 2500 gallon sump with a show or display refugium, on a 5000gallon tank. Will I be able to slow the flow in sump and refugium more? I'm working on a possible foam skimmer that is close to 1000gallon as well. The idea is to slow the water quality by having a bit slower sump and skimmer flow.

“Slow water quality”
Do you mean improve water quality through slowing water and increasing contact time….I’m not sure what you mean?

I run refuge flow very slow, lots of contact time.

Each component can run at different flow rates.

Maybe I misunderstand the ?

Yes the second part. Sorry at times my brain doesn't put the words as I want to. I was thinking either that or a stacked tank. Top reef bottom refugium with overlap for natural overflow

I certainly believe water quality in terms of nitrate and phosphate can be improved or able to handle increased loads with greater contact time.

My sump runs at the speed the overflows can handle, for me, that’s about 3-4 times per hour turnover.

My refuge runs 1 time per hour turnover, slower, this is where my chaeto is so I like more contact time, thus allows me to run nitrates and phosphates at lower levels and increase feedings.

Great, I think I have talked myself I to building the stacked one, wil just have a overlap of a few cm back and sides, giving a natural 1.4m overflow. Now overflow will either go part refugium part skimmer, and hopefully the 1000gallon foam skimming tank does the same job. Then I can. Rotate the sump at the perfect rate, have a decent flow rate from the skimmer back to refugium and tank directly.should be adequate. Now I need to work on the turbulence and flow with return pumps.

More contact time is only a thing if you interact with the water once. That’s not what happens in our closed systems where stuff that bypasses the filter the first time comes back around for another round a short time later. The bottom limit is having so little flow that the water chemistry is different between the sump and display. As long as you keep the two well mixed, you have enough flow between them.

I have ordered the Neptune automation system to make sure about that, that's the one with automatic testing and dosing functions. So should have the same quality a round, or I hope. The design itself has some movement I have the full Clearview panels for the setup. Now thinking of doing it in double stacked format. Have a replica sized refurgium display tank, and reef tank.
I just want the cleanest look possible
