Sunday September 22nd marks the first day of autumn in the northern hemisphere. Vacations are over, the kids are in school, and your tank is starting to stare at you. How did you do this past summer? Are you looking at a mess, or is it just another fine reefing day for you?

I did pretty good myself. Had some lulls and bad luck, but kept up on all my maintenance! :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Overall, tank looks decent. But I’m a little concerned about my salinity level. LOL

Same mess, new season here. Holding off on must things as I may be taking a job across the country and don't know what to do with the tank.
Are you wanting to take it with you or rehome it all?

I plumbed my old 50 gal lagoon into my 120 penisula in a different room for my mangroves. I've been letting my 120 stabilized just doing water changes since I moved. This winter should be fun striving for growth and adding some new sps.

Perfect world, I'd take some or most of the reef (especially the growout frags) But the drive would kill everything.
I haven’t moved a tank myself, but the best options that I’ve heard are to have another tank ready ahead of time, or start over after you get settled in. Or maybe find someone to hold some of it for you, then ship it when you are ready? Selling it all can be tough, but it is doable at the right price. I can imagine it’d be difficult to let it go cheaply for many reasons though.

Steering over send the last stressful. I could have someone set up a track there and unload boxes into it.... There are options, but is yet I don't even have an offer; know it's coming but don't have the figures yet.

I have moved several tanks over the years, every time though I was able to set up and get running a new tank ahead of time at the new residence. I did have losses but not super horrible. That being said Ive never moved cross country 2 hours away was farthest,

Having a tank at the end makes it possible if I fly. I can bring whatever fits in a carry on.

September/October in Wisconsin are arguably then best moths of the year weather wise. It's still hot but not too hot and usually dry. Nights are cool enough that we don't need AC at all as long as you have a fan in the window. (honestly not a big fan of hot hot balmy mid summer, or hot weather in general) My Dad's a full blow St. Paul Minnesotan!

Anyway, my oldest son is a Jr. in high school this year and after all of 10 legitimate "summer breaks" This year it hit me that the amount of summers I have left while my kids are on summer break are fleeting. This is not really a "normal" yearly schedule unless you're a teacher of course. But working from home gives me the opportunity to spend more time with these guys in the summer months when sales kind of slow up a bit anyway.

And this year I did just that. So I dialed back the business stuff a bit pulled away, and tried to enjoy it as much as I could. Will be getting back to the grind here real soon though. Lots of overdue colony shots coming. More grow out contests and some sales for sure :)

Enjoy them to the fullest, and don’t take a moment for granted. My kids are 17-21 and none of them have time for me anymore. One is moved out with kids of her own, one is never home, and one is a senior in hs. I swear it was just yesterday I took off the training wheels and now they have their own lives.

We have moved an entire reef tank from Brooklyn nyc to Richmond VA before with no losses so about 7 hours drive time, not including tank tear down or setup at the new spot.
We even had a 8” derasa clam with us. We got multiple bigger Tupperware totes and put the coral colonies in there with room to not smash against each other. Then had a power inverter hooked up inside the car powering a few small power heads to keep the water moving and aerated. Think we also had a couple of those small preset heaters that are meant for 5-10g tanks to keep the water warm.
It is a bit exhausting tearing the tank down, moving the corals and the having to setup the tank when you get there but it’s doable and not that bad. I mean we ship corals across the world in bags, giving them aerated moving warm water while it happens is like nothing really is happening.
If you’re able to have another tank already setup at the new place so when you get in all you have to do is transfer the corals to the new system that’s even better. Otherwise you just have to make sure you can keep the corals alive in the totes until you get the tank set up.

With a little preplanning it’s def doable.

A storm took out my my raspberry pi that I was using for alerting on my aquarium. I work from home 99% of the time... but a work trip came along.

Wife decided to shampoo the carpet in an adjacent room, flipped a breaker and decided to use another outlet without reseting it.

I came home a few days later to a stinky mess. A clown miraculously lived... pretty much everything else except some gsp and favites(that I hate) died.

Damage: Near total crash.

Oh man, that’s terrible! I hope you can recover and keep enjoying your tank. Maybe you can get an upgrade out of the deal via a little guilt trip?

I fixed my raspberry pi system already. I'm thinking about replacing it with an apex system the next time they go on sale.

I also took full advantage of the last battlecorals sale and made a big order. Adam delivered! bunch of frags that look more like colonies! I actually bought a new frag rack because I didn't like how close some were.

Here's a picture of one.
