I'm finally stocking my tank and have a few coming in this weekend but worries about coral warfare. I want to keep or should keep the torches together and hammers grouped together but wondering if I can for example keep a candy cane next to a bubble coral. Can a torch be next to a bubble coral or candy cane etc ???

If it were my tank I would keep the candy cane far away from the bubble and the torch away from the others. You said it correct though that the torches can touch each other as well as the hammers can touch each other.

Agree with @dwest for the most part. I have seen some torches not play well with other torches. I dont know if its a aussie vs where ever thing or some torches just being jerks. I like to do a touch test with their polyps to see if they try to stick together or if they just slide off before I make any permanent placements. But yes keep candy canes away from all of them. Never had issues with hammers. In the past I even had all euphyllia touching without issue, seems stuff has changed greatly in the 12ish years I was away from the hobby. Hammers and frogspawn can also touch usually.

Confirm, lost a piece or two figuring that out….related question: are Grape cristata of the torch persuasion?

I see the “usually” …I will join you on the “usually” level
I think I had one the other hammers seemed to reject…but they can be as finicky as they are hardy sometimes …just wasn’t sure

OK, so if I test and have them touch and they stick = Not good, if they just slide off = Good ?

Correct. It may be stress related at first but typically if they stick one is stinging the other one. I like to touch them together and see if they stick, if they do how aggressive is it, if its not to bad I will leave them together for an hour or so and observe, if the sticking stops or one of the corals closes up I decide. If one closes up its probably not a good sign and they need space if they both stay open and the sticking is not bad I will do a "soft mount" and observe over a couple days and make a decision.

More torch. One of my hammers puts out 6-8" sweepers doesnt seem to bother the other hammers but it has toasted the frog spawn that is touching other hammers. So "usually" is not always in all circumstances.

Gotcha. What do you use for a soft mount ? I’m always looking for good mounting methods

Just super glue gel but I only use a little bit so it will hold the coral but its really easy to remove. You cant mount it in a weird spot that is defying gravity though.
