I know this topic has been discussed in the past but I am very confused on what is going on here. I do my chemistry checks every Sunday and today I have a unexpected change in my Calcium.
History: Dosing BRS 2 part along with TM part C. My bubble algae eradication process raised my NO3 but has steadily been coming down to my setpoint. I use both Hanna and Red Sea Pro test kits for Alk and Ca, ( Double Check ).
Today my measured Ca was 400ppm with Red Sea and 402ppm with Hanna. It has never been this low ever. I understand that NO3 has a affect on Alk but not sure by how much.
To get my Ca back to 450ppm that would require a dose of 1305ml of BRS calcium chloride which makes absolutely no sense to me. I am only dosing 72ml of Alk and Ca per day to maintain levels but for some reason my calcium did a big drop from last weeks test's and not sure why. I did a 10% water change last week and I just checked my storage tank and it is at 450ppm Ca.
The only thing I can think of is I got a bad batch of Calcium Chloride. I mixed a new pouch last week and put it in my dosing container. Below are my test results along with the levels in my dosing containers. Alk on the left and Ca in the middle. As you can see they are at the same level so dosers are measuring accurately. Any thoughts on what is going on here would be appreciated.

I just tested the Ca in the dosing container. Took 4 cups of tank water at 400ppm and added 1.28ml of Ca and it measured at 460ppm so it is not a bad batch of Calcium Chloride. So what could it be?

I added 500ml of Ca to the display tank approx an hr ago and as expected the Ca increased to 420ppm Red Sea Pro and 423ppm Hanna. I will test tomorrow and add more Ca as needed to bring it up to 450ppm.

Calcium cannot decline without consuming a lot of alk. For a 60 ppm calcium drop, alk would decline by about 8.4 dKH.

Of course, alk may have been added in some way, or there was test or dosing errors. Both testing and dosing pump errors are very common. Freakish chemistry is not common. :)
