I've had a sand sifter star in my tank as long as I've had it running and its been reef safe the entire time.

Ive always heard and have no clue if its true but you dont want the ones with thorns like the chocolate chip starfish etc etc again i may be wrong

There are several stars that are reef safe!

Most linkia starfish are reef safe that I know of. Brittle and Serpent as well.
