Many moons ago I had a 75 with a 20l sump setup. I had a rio 3100 on that sucker. After the loss in head height it was putting out about 700gph, giving me almost a 10x turnover rate. Flow rate recommendations depend on what you want to keep. What are you planning on stocking it with?

Right now I have 2 clowns, a scissortail, midas blenny, mandarin, coral beauty, diamond goby, coris wrasse, porcelain crab and a cleaner shrimp. I started out with a HOB aquaclear 110 but I'm switching to a sump now.

I'm setting up a 20g long sump for my 75 gallon and was wondering if I should go bigger with the 3.0 or if the 2.0 is plenty.
2.0 is sufficient as I ran a 3.0 on a 135g with plenty of movement

The important part is matching the gph capability of your overflow with your pump. My old 75g has 3-1.5” drains, it was built to handle much more than I ran through it. It was built for a sps dominant mixed reef. You don’t need all that extra flow.

I like the 3.0, it is a good pump. Interesting enough the 3.5 has less GPH than the 3.0
I ran the 3.0 in my modified 13.5g with a surge filter that sat above the tank about 2ft. and through a chiller that sat below the tank about 2ft. So you have to ask yourself how many returns are you going to have? Are you going to run a manifold now or in the future? how many turns are you going to have in your plumbing, which I would say are the biggest flow killer? If your system is going to be more elaborate you might consider the bigger pump. BTW I am pretty sure they occupy the sam footprint.
