Will be building a canopy to go over my new 8’ tank. Would like to see some canopy designs and ideas that you have implemented to make life easier. I have never had a tank with a canopy, but that was the requirement from my wife when I purchased this new tank. Thanks for the help!

Initially I was thinking of having the whole front hinge up for access. But I’m leaning more toward having doors. I’m concerned about light bleed through the door cracks.

I have a front hinge top and definitely gives plenty of access, makes maintenance a lot easier, haven’t had doors on a canopy but seems like they would get in the way during the maintenance.

When done properly there will be no light spill. The builder can use a small thin piece of wood on one door that will block light spill. Just let the person know who is doing the work that you don't want light spill. If they don't know then you shouldn't be using their service anyway. So a good question to ask.

For my 180 I have a custom canopy and stand very nice I'll see if I can find pics from when it was set up as the canopy is in storage atm. But it has both a full hinged front and doors on that. The door are nice for feeding, the flip up front is great for everything else. The top 2" maybe 3 is part of the front makes for a lot of room to work when needed.

That’s my thought for the maintenance aspect. Would love to see pictures of how it’s done.

When I had my 180 built into the wall, I used a piece of wood to block the two door in between and stapled felt around the edge so they snugged up securely. There was no light spill

My interest was to make it as light as I could. Typical canopies were made of 2x2 frames, but to lighten things up I made L-braces made by ripping inexpensive fir strips and then gluing and screwing, making the L.

This provides strength with minimal weight. These were used on the top front and back of the canopy, which was skinned with 1/4 inch plywood. Here it is upside down without the door.

Door was very simply made with 1/4 plywood with framing on the outside to stiffen it up. Here it is with the canopy open:

And here it is with the canopy door closed:

@Joe Glass Cages seeing as this is one of your tanks, is there any issue putting a canopy on top of the eurobraced tank?

Gosh, I hope not. I too have a Glass Cage tank with Euro bracing and my canopy sits right on top of the bracing. I don't remember picking this, but my plastic trim is black....notice yours is white. FYI, my tank was from February, 2018....I think this was before Joe took over the company.

I’m sure it’s fine but I wanted to make sure.
