I have a feeling the answer is going to be, not possible, but I am trying to figure out how to get sharp close up photos with an iPhone XR. When I do close photos (not using the zoom) the fine details are lost under what looks like some sort of artistic filter giving it a sort of painter look. I do not use filters. I have turned off the smart HDR and I've upped the record video (I might have misunderstood one set of instructions about doing that for photos). When I load my photos onto an editing program they are coming up 72 DPI which is crap.
Is there any way, any app I can use, to produce a better shot? Macro is very important for a project I'm doing photographing some coral. Thanks in advance.

Is this going to sharpen the picture. Blue isn’t my issue. It’s the lack of sharpness when the photos are enlarged.

Not sure, try it out and see. Sharpness plays with megapixels when enlarging pictures. This is why they sell cameras with huge megapixel sensors, designed for portraits and enlarged photos. Good luck.

I think what I may need is a macro lens. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd rather not spend an arm and leg, but would like something I could take close up photos with.

Thanks

Get a large Hand held magnifying glass from Harbor Freight. I have to adjust the distances but it gets close up Picts decently. Total poor mans iPhone zoom lens. The deck is stacked for us just using an IPhone though it totally thinks it knows better and changes lenses and screws up the focus. I wish we could have full manual focus and zoom but that’s what a real camera is for. Here is a couple I got real quick

I have used several macro lens on various phones, but I don't currently have one on my XR. I am currently looking at the IceCap clip-on photo lens kit.

That just sort of seems like cheating doesn't it? Sort of like going into lightroom and changing da settings?

This is the best picture I’ve tanked with my iPhone XS Max. It’s not the XR but do you have Portrait mode on your iPhone? That’s how I took this pic.

Sadly, it seems no amount of magnification is going to get the cell phone to take clear photos at the macro level I need.

Camera+ app plus Icecap clip filters. The camera+ app have a macro function is is pretty good, only inconvenience is that you have to take the picture close to the subject. These are some shots using the above combination.

What app are you using for iPhone to get pictures of this quality? My pictures turn out nothing but blue.

Camera+ app, also you will need an orange filter over your phone lens. There are a couple of different models in the market for reef tank photography, but I personally use IceCap:

You can use retouchme app. It is one of my favorite. You send your photo saying what should be done and get your photo back the way you want. Or you can add sharpness using lightroom, VSCO, and snapseed. All of them available on iPhone XR.
