Hey all so I’m setting up a 200 gallon tank and want a 2 inch sand bed for the future diggers and such, wife really likes a fine grade sand which petco sells but since i need so much sand alternatives cheaper route?

Mason same Home Depot?
NJ toxic beach sand?
Or just bite the bullet and buy sand from petco

Get the dry caribsea special grade. Fine sand will blow around if you plan on any kind of flow. The dry version is cheaper than the alive version. Be very wary of any products from not designed to be added to your aquarium. This can kill wild life due to contaminates

Fine sand will blow around like crazy with flow. I originally did fine sand and quickly learned it was a mistake and had to switch it out. I’d recommend the Caribsea Special Grade sand. Buy the 40Lb bags

I strongly suggest Fiji pink over special grade. It throws up far less dust when added or rinsed. Is far less likely to irritate your fish who burrow. Finally I have had Fiji pink in my predator tank for two years and it has stayed perfectly white and not gone muddy like the special grade in my coral tank.

Probably BRS. They have a sand calculator so you know how much to order
This is hard for me to say but the sad truth, It would cost me $120 to ship 40 lbs ($55) of sand shipped to me from BRS. I have voiced my rant with them personally. I set up a salt shipment from them and the cost for 46 lbs. of salt was $129. Not happenning, Petco was free shipping, go figure

Really? Where do you live? I’m in CA and I just checked with the 40Lb bag of sand and shipping is only $5.99. Pretty sure it’d be free if I added something else and went over the $49 free shipping limit

For a new build I might get a small load of TBS and then mix it in with whatever medium grain sand you and the wife can agree on.

As a side note, raise your hand if you remember doing group orders of Play sand from home Depot when you could get the aragonite stuff.

+1 for tropical eden... reef flakes won't blow around in the highest of flows..

If I has deep pockets then TBS sand for the biome it provides.

my 2 bags broke the free ship cost, I live in Georgia, salt was the same, even their BRS mini carbon reactor with pump would cost me $31 to ship it when its costs $65
