HI All, Needing some advice.. I have a 2 year reef that is rocking and now I am thinking I need to do some fragging and trimming. I don’t like the idea of frag racks in my display. So asking for advice on how would you go about setting up a small 20-40 gallon frag system separate from the display

Since you have been successful with your current reef, why not just add a frag tank and combine with your existing sump and get the same lights etc.,...it looks to have worked well for you this far.

Use water and sand from your tank to seed the new system.

The best would be if you could tie the new tank into the existing one.

Frag tanks aren't any different than your regular tank, so whatever you're doing there, do in the frag tank.

Some Reefers like to add a separate tank and plumb it into their existing one. This is easier and less expensive. However, if your display tank ever has issues, your frag tank may have them also. I like to have separate tanks and sumps. It is more expensive and more difficult to match parameters, but it allows me to not have all my “eggs in one basket”. I also have no sand in my frag tanks, with the rock in the sump.

Thanks… where my display is located is not really where I would want my frag system.. so not interested in plumbing together. Do frag systems with no fish still have nutrients build up? Just trying to think of the most basic filtration I can do.

You'll def want to set it up like a Reef Tank in most regards. You'll want to FEED the coral and FISH is one way to help. Also, most of your most successful Frag Tanks have a few fish for pests and to provide some food for the corals.
