Thoughts on what this is? I thought it was red bubble algae, but it looks like it has small stalks... so I’m wondering if it’s actually a grape macro instead.

Red Bubble Algae, Botryocladia
redbubblealgae 300x225

Red Bubble Algae is one of the Botryocladia species, (probably skottsbergeii or pyriformis) . Some of the Botryocladia species, like Botryocladia occidentalis, are desirable. The main difference between an invasive species of Botryocladia and a desirable one is how it grows. Desirable species grow up from branches, and invasive species creep along the rock just leaving hard to remove bubbles. Some are in between both in risk and branch development.

So as a follow up, I let it grow a bit and then took another picture today. It still doesn’t look like red bubble algae to me, but honestly, I’ve never had it before. It seems to resemble red grape macro but I thought it would’ve started growing a stalk at this point. Any thoughts? Everyone still think it’s a grape macro?

I took the rock out and took a couple of pictures. The large leaf or balls are about the size of a zoa polyp.

Hi, I’m new as well I just noticed a few in my tank. I took out the rock and scraped it off I’m not 100% sure if it’s red grape or red algae. I’m hoping this will solve my problem.

Red bubble I believe as there seems to be no stalk. I'll take any off your hands if anyone has but doesn't want it! :D I have a 90 gal tank just for collecting macros, even if they can be kind of a nuisance that most people wouldn't want.

I determined it was in fact red bubble algae. It’s long gone now though.
