Can you create presets? I like to change the modes and settings on the camera. My wife like to just use the standard mode to take pics. Can i create a preset on the camera to remember my settings?

what kind of settings are you talking about?

if you are talking about the custom functions, no there is no way to do that unless you upgrade to the 40D.

my biggest pet peeve with the XTi was i used mirror lock and the timer on my tank/coral shots, but then forgot to take it off when i would go use it for regular shooting, so i'd have to reconfigure those custom functions every time.

i was just wondering if i switched it to AV mode, had all the setting the way i like it, then be able to save those settings. I did leave the camera in AV mode once and the wife did not realize it and got some bad shots. So if i switch it to the normal for her then come back to my mode, i was wonder if i could just have a preset to get back to the sweet settings once i figured out what works best.

I guess i should write it down once i figure it out.

"So on the rebel when you put it in say Av mode and then set the settings how you wanted, iso, aperture, ev +/-, etc... and then you leave out of Av mode or shut the camera off, when you go back to Av mode the settings aren't the same?"

I don't no i never tried it, i was seeing if you could do some sort of preset.

again, it depends on what settings you are talking about. for example:

if i were shooting tank pics in Av mode, say at f/9, ISO 100......and then switched to full Auto mode, and then back to Av mode, those f/9 and ISO 100 settings would still be there. of course, in full auto or any other mode, those f/stop and ISO settings don't really matter.

however, say if you were using the remote timer in Av mode, then switched to full auto, the remote timer would still be activated and you would have to turn it off manually. same goes with mirror lock up, or any other custom functions you have turned on in the menu settings.

i'm pretty sure whatever settings you are shooting at in whatever manual mode, it will keep those settings and not transfer them over to the next mode (except of course for the timer shooting, and custom functions).

honestly, thats why i liked the 40D a whole lot more b/c it has those 3 C modes you can have custom defined settings in. the mirror lock always messed me up when i turned on the camera to capture a pic of something happening really quick. and it takes like a min to find the settings in the menu to turn it off.

the XTi does not have those C1-3 settings, not sure about the XT....but i doubt it.

yes, they are the same as long as the internal battery doesn't fail. (not the one you have to charge)

Good info to have... I'm waiting until canon makes any new product announcements on Jan 24th before I pull the trigger on any camera.

yeah, it will be interesting to see what they announce. but as far as cost goes, its a BIG step up from the XTi to the 40D. having the preset functions doesn't really warrent that kind of $$ alone IMO.
