Okay- Hello!

I have about 100 lbs of rock from a previously torn down tank- rotting in coolers and tuber ware.

If it were me- I would throw it all in a garbage bin and let it bleach for a week, take it out, spray and scrape all the dead coral off.

Here’s where the problem arises.
This rock had palythoas that were confirmed with palytoxin. (Got sent to the ER from just opening a cooler of dead corals.)

-1. they’ve been sitting sealed shut for about a week so there’s a strong fear of opening them.

-2. Where would I dump all the excess from the rocks. (I have dogs, cats, etc.)

3. Should I just buy all new rock and toss everything I have now.

4. The hell do I do with those coolers and everything if the rock is going to get thrown out

Activated carbon has been determined to be a neutralizer for Palytoxin.

I would throw in a reactor and would let it run for a couple of weeks.

No need to replace the rocks.

True- so does bleach though. I should’ve clarified in my post- I don’t know where to dispose of my Gunk and everything after letting it all sit out.

Like what do you guys do? Dump an entire garbage bin full of rotten coral somewhere? Is there a process? :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

I have no knowledge about the effectiveness of bleach on Playtoxin - but I assume you did your own research about it.

As for where to dispose - once it’s been neutralized, I would simply drain the water into the toilet.

Edit: oh boy.. auto correct..

Sooooo do you think I might be opening a chemical bomb right now if I pop the lid on these coolers?

I don’t have a respirator just one of those basic masks you wear for dust.

Just wondering if I should be concerned about death right now

Well, I’m not an authority on the subject, all I can suggest is what I would do if I were in your position.

Personally, I would take it outside the house, to the the open air (could also be a balcony, or outside the window) and let it aerate for a while. Then I would add a carbon reactor, or bleach, or anything else that is known to neutralize Palytoxin and other toxins and would leave it there for a couple of weeks.

I wouldn’t try to sniff it or do anything funny with it, and I would also make sure others wouldn’t be able to come close to it either.

Welp. Too late. (,:
Should’ve waited for a few more responses before diving into that.

I opened them, filled with cold hose water, and dumped a bit more than 10% bleach over them.

Letting the ones without Paly sit for 30 mins then taking them out and cleaning them off a little, letting them dry in the sun.

As for the ones with Palys,… hell idk.
I have one container sitting with bleach sealed shut- been a few days now- still scared to open those.

Alright, I’m going to get rid of the coolers with the Palys then. Too bad I filled them with water —- I have no idea how I’m going to lift or move those :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
I got a mild reaction this time popping that last cooler with the dead Palys, not nearly as bad as last time. Then again I was standing about 20 ft away.

Apparently palytoxin doesn’t go away for anyone curious.

Keep the wind at your back, open with a stick, insert dynamite ..... just kidding, but do open with a steady wind AWAY from you, after moving container away from everything and anything living. Aim a hose at it to let it fill and over run for awhile to dilute any toxins. Then I would bleach, rinse and (cant think of the word) age the rock in a container to finish off the rotting proteins .

Im probably going to go dump them in a field belonging to someone we don’t like :smiling-face-with-sunglasses::grinning-face-with-sweat:

Tbh after all that scrubbing I think smell more potent and deadly than these corals.
