I am planning starting up a legitimate frag tank in my basement.

I missed the boat for starting a build thread for my display tank, but now that I know this is a thing I am going to do one for my frag tank.

Long story short we are remodeling the bathroom in our basement and I have been given permission to remove a storage closet in the corner and turn it into a "fish" area.

My goal is to have the majority of the area be dedicated to the frag tank, but also having some good work area for doing other reef tank related things like QT'ing fish.

The frag tank will serve two purposes, first off it will be a grow-out AND QT tank for any new corals I get, but it will also serve as a fishless tank where I can QT any inverts that I get.

More info to come soon!

It will be a good project. It is probably many months from completion but I plan to document the demolition of the existing room, along with the new build-out of the area, and finally the frag tank itself.

just keep in mind that for fish QT you want tanks placed at least 7 feet from anything else as it is possible for parasites to travel in aerozolized water droplets between systems if they are in close physical proximity.

i'm too lazy at the moment to find the citation for this.

I have read that before.

I think you are referring to the article linked in this thread:
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/aerosol-transmission.190292/

I was considering something similar to what is proposed in this article:
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2016/11/aafeature

While I acknowledge that aerosol transmission is probably possible. I just don't have the space to ensure that everything is always 7 feet apart. My gut also tells me that I am more likely to make a user-error and transfer a parasite than it is to transfer in an aerosolized water droplet. At this point it is a risk I am aware of, and will do my best to account for, but I just don't have the space (or consent from my better half) to have quarantine tanks strewn around the basement.

So it has been a long time, and I hate to say that I haven't made a lot of exciting progress on this but I did take some pictures today of how far we have come.

There are also some pictures from when we were first getting started before we started taking down the walls. Along with a bonus picture of my mixing station.

One of the reasons this is going so slow is that we made the poor choice of not renting a dumpster for all of the construction debris. So we have been cutting it all down to size, bending nails, and bagging it to go in the garbage. Such a pain. About 50% of the time I have spent on this project has been clean-up work. In the future if we ever tackle anything like this again, we are definitely going to be renting a dumpster.

1 week check in :)

Unfortunately there has been absolutely zero progress this week. It has been crazy at work lately and I am out of town this weekend so won't have a chance to get back to working on this until next week probably. :(
